The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is pleased to announce our Fall seminar series, organized as a component to the undergraduate course CHE 401, Chemistry Seminar. All seminars are virtual and they will also be recorded to optimize access. Each research talk will be followed by an informal chat with the speaker, yielding time for extended dialogue about research, careers in the chemical sciences, professional employment, or graduate school options. Faculty-student collaboration is at the center of marine science undergraduate research. Hannah Korper (BS Marine Science, 2022) is collaborating with Dr. Carrie Byron (Assistant Professor, School of Marine & Environmental Programs) and graduate student Emilly Schutt (MS Marine Science 2022). Hannah has been helping to design and deploy GoPro camera systems to look for fish using seaweed farms as habitat. Wild kelp beds are declining in the Gulf of Maine. The goal of this study is to quantify if and how kelp farms provide habitat and enhance biodiversity for other species. This project is funded by The Nature Conservancy and focuses on the Ecosystem Services of aquaculture farms. Congratulations to Dr. Caleb Spiers, Ph.D. (Assistant Teaching Professor, physics), Collyn Baeder, M.P.H. (Assistant Clinical Professor, health, wellness, & occupational studies (HWOS)) and Christopher Delenick, OTR/L (Clinical Instructor, HWOS) whose students are presenting at the UNE HWOS Day of Scholarship- Friday, April 23. In total, 26 groups are presenting, with roughly 75 students total, across four organized sessions. Awesome work! Here, Dr. Markus Frederich (Professor of Marine Sciences, School of Marine and Environmental Programs)and students count softshell clams in the mudflats. In Professor Perazio's Colombian Humpback Research Program (CHRP), students Maddie Dolan ('20), Ashley Johnston ('21) and Sidney Lyytikainen ('22) analyze humpback whale song to understand how whales might respond to rising ocean noise.
