Hi everyone! I’m Cally, and I did an Instagram takeover last March while studying abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France! 🇫🇷 I’m so excited to share more of the places I visited and things I learned during my semester abroad. I thought I’d start by sharing some of my favorite travel memories! ✈️🌍

🇮🇹 Italy (1-5): My week in Italy was amazing! We spent five days in Florence and took trips to Cinque Terre and Pisa before heading to Milan for three days. While there, we took a train to Crema, the filming location of Call Me by Your Name! I also got to see Michael Schumacher’s World Championship car at the official Ferrari store in Milan! 🏎️

🇩🇪🇦🇹 Germany & Austria (6-8): Our February trip was especially memorable because it was our first time traveling outside of France! We stumbled upon a beautiful historic cathedral and got to see the breathtaking Austrian Alps. 🏔️

🏰 Disney (9-12): In April, I had to make a trip to Disney because I’m a Disney adult (thank you, Jessie, pictured in photo #9 😊) and have a bucket-list goal of visiting every Disney park around the world. The nighttime spectacular at Disney Adventure World was incredible, and as a Marvel fan, that area was easily my favorite! ✨

🥐 Paris (13-15): Of course, I had to try the famous Parisian “crookie” (croissant + cookie), and it did not disappoint! I also visited the Palace of Versailles with my friend Alyssa and my aunt Jessie and uncle Travis, where I finally got to see the Hall of Mirrors in person. And, of course, the Eiffel Tower was another highlight!

Studying abroad gave me so many opportunities to explore new places, experience different cultures, and make memories I’ll never forget. I can’t wait to share more of my adventures with you all! ❤️🌍

These were my host parents from the semester!

MundoLengua organizes students into host families. I was honestly really nervous from the beginning because I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t really know the family well, and I was nervous I wouldn’t know how to communicate with the people I’d be living with. But you learn to adapt to a new environment. You learn to communicate, and taking Spanish classes at UPO definitely helps! There were times where I struggled adjusting to the meal times or not doing my own laundry. But you eventually get into a rhythm and living with a host family can be such a special part of being abroad. It may be intimidating at first going into a country you may have never been to before and living with a family you don’t know. As long as you go abroad with an open mind, accept that some challenges are apart of it, and make the effort to immerse yourself into the culture, you will have such a memorable experience. Ana and Álvaro were amazing hosts to me. They had me in their best interest and made sure I was comfortable living with them. Ana especially pushed me to go out my comfort zone and made herself approachable for advice. When my mom visited me, they made the effort to meet and connect with her, even with a language barrier. Saying goodbye to this family was definitely a hard one.

There are going to be times where communication can be a little difficult, but the host families accommodated through the program have plenty of experience with abroad students and are patient about language barriers.

Please feel free to reach out to me (Aly) if you have any questions about Seville or living with a host family! I’d be happy to share more about my experience :))

Hasta la próxima!!🇪🇸

There were three main trips that our program, MundoLengua did with us. These trips are included in with the semester:

The first 5 slides are from Lisbon! We spent a weekend there exploring the city and learning about its history. I loved this trip so much. It is such a beautiful city, and the food was amazing! Definitely bring good walking shoes though, there’s hills everywhere !

The next 3 are from our day trip to Caminito Del Rey, which took us on a cliffside walkway in a gorge. This is located in Málaga, Spain, only a couple hours from Sevilla. I liked this trip because it was a good break from the city, and it was so cool seeing all the enormous valleys around!!

The last set of photos are from our weekend Morocco trip! We went to Chefchaouen, Asilah, and Tangier. It was so fun getting to experience Morocco’s culture! My favorite city was Chefchaouen, especially since we had the most free time to explore. I also really loved the food 🤗

I would say one of the most memorable times from being in Sevilla was the Feria de Abril!

This special event has been around for over a century. It lasts about 7 days, usually two weeks following Semana Santa (Holy Week). The big entrance with the lights in the first picture is called la portada. They light it up the first night at midnight following with fireworks. The rest of the week, people come for long hours of celebrating with friends and family. There’s lots of drinking, music, dancing, and tapas! During the day there’s hundreds of horse-drawn carriages dressed up in bells and colorful ribbons. Many families in the city rent a special tent known as a caseta. You need to have some relation with that family or their friends to be invited to them. There’s also public ones for those that don’t rent casetas, including tourists. Thousands of visitors come to Sevilla from all over Spain and other countries just for this special week. There’s also a section of the Feria with rides and games. The week ends with a firework show over the river.

This experience was so memorable for me because I got to spend hours dancing with my Spanish friends from UPO and my host family. The crowds were a bit overwhelming at some points, but everyone is there for a good time. La Feria is a great reflection of Andalusian culture and how welcoming it is to those who want to participate. Although I’m sure either semester is a memorable experience, I recommend going in the Spring so you get to go to this exciting festival!
