RMC Writing Center

RMC Writing Center The Writing Center, located in our college library, provides one-on-one tutoring for student writers A student is the primary agent in a writing center session.

The student, not the tutor, must own the paper and take full responsibility for it. The tutor facilitates the student, helping her/him focus on the writing and arrive at writing decisions that are sensitive to professors’ assignments. A student who comes to the Writing Center and expects to passively receive knowledge from a tutor will not become any closer to her/his writing and will not improve as a writer. We are in the business of helping students improve as writers, and that business requires students’ investment. See us in the library or schedule an appointment with Director Nick Plunkey at [email protected]. Students who visited the Writing Center last year provided us with the following comments:
I will use [the center] for every paper that I need to do, regardless of extra credit. Both of my visits have been very helpful. They helped me lay out my paper in a way that was organized and [made] sense. It really helped me develop ideas about how to work through parts of my paper. It always feels awkward to ask for help, but [the tutor] made it a lot more comfortable. She was very patient and asked good questions. It was more helpful then [sic] expected. I was nervous it would be awkward but it wasn’t at all! I’m just thankful that there is a program of peers that can help, and guide me to improve my ability. It helped with my confidence in the paper.
[The tutor] was extremely helpful and let me solve my own problems … and helped me break my paper down sentence by sentence.
[The center] helped me be more prepared for future assignments. The tutor was very helpful and kind. I felt comfortable talking with her. Big computers. Very productive. I left feeling much better about my piece. I really appreciated the quiet room.

Driving Montana

The day is a woman who loves you. Open.
Deer drink close to the road and magpies
spray from your car. Miles from any town
your radio comes in strong, unlikely
Mozart from Belgrade rock and roll
from Butte. Whatever the next number
you want to hear it. Never has your Buick
found this forward a gear. Even
the tuna salad in Reedpoint is good.

Towns arrive ahead of imagined schedule
Absorakee at one. Or arrive so late—
Silesia at nine—you recreate the day.
Where did you stop along the road
and have fun? Was there a runaway horse?
Did you park at that house, the one
alone in a void of grain, white with green
trim and red fence, where you know you lived
once? You remembered the ringing creek,
the soft brown forms of far off bison.
You must have stayed hours, then drove on.
In the motel you know you’d never seen it before.

Tomorrow will open again, the sky wide
as the mouth of a wild girl, friable
clouds you lose yourself to. You are lost
in miles of land without people, without
one fear of being found, in the dash
of rabbits, soar of antelope, swirl
merge and clatter of streams.
