Environmental Studies at Binghamton University

Environmental Studies at Binghamton University The Environmental Studies Program at Binghamton University helps foster an understanding of the relationships of humans with the environment.

Critical issues facing our society today—from global warming to species extinction, water contamination to soil erosion—are environmental in nature. Finding solutions to these problems will require interdisciplinary efforts that bridge traditional academic fields such as political science and ecology. The Environmental Studies Program at Binghamton is designed to foster an understanding of the rel

ationships of humans with the environment. The premise of environmental studies is that effective environmental policy must be based on a solid understanding of science and that scientists working on environmental problems must understand the policy and economic framework in which their science will be applied. The Environmental Studies Program at Binghamton University is for everyone interested in learning more about environmental law and policy, or about how ecosystems work in the context of human intervention, or about how costs and benefits can be calculated, or about how groundwater gets contaminated and what we can do about it.

✨🌳Three seniors from the Department of Environment & Sustainability took their capstone to the next level.💯

On Thursday, May 7, they organized more than 40 volunteers to hold an Environmental Education Day for fifth graders from around the City of Binghamton. The college students introduced the elementary school students to the Nature Preserve, fossils, composting, and other important sustainability ideas. Great work, Jackie Palmer, Brynn Rice, and Bryce Wallace!

(Thanks to Harpur Edge for co-sponsoring and to the NYS Department of Conservation and Cornell Cooperative Extension for participating.)

🌿🌍Happy Earth Day!🌍🌿
Today is the 22nd of April, the day we take a moment from our busy lives and reflect on how we treat our planet. It's important to raise awareness of issues such as pollution, climate change, and conservation to help encourage individuals, communities, and governments to take better care of the planet.

In the end, Earth Day serves as a reminder to step back and see how our choices affect us, and to try a little harder every day to protect something we all share.

🌿🌳Join us TOMORROW at 3:15 pm in Science 2, Room 839, for a lecture by Professor Peter C. Little (Department of Anthropology, Rhode Island College) exploring the intersection of anthropology and political ecology.🌳🌿

Focusing on Endicott, New York, Professor Peter C. Little examines the lasting impacts of industrial pollution, deindustrialization, and environmental health politics in a “toxic tech” community. Through ethnographic research, the lecture connects local history to broader questions about sustainability, power, and environmental justice.

🍁🐝 Maple & Honey Day on Campus! 🐝🍁
🌱This past week, our ENVI 336: Sweet Harvest – Bees and Maple class brought campus to life with a hands-on look at how maple syrup and honey are made. Students tapped trees and boiled sap into fresh maple syrup, while our partnership with the BU Bee Club added another layer of sweetness with locally produced honey from BU Acres. Visitors stopped by to learn about these processes and enjoy samples made right here on campus! 🌱
