UAB’s Biology Department is the place for you. Our world-class scientists provide world-class training. We place more undergraduates in health-related professional schools and in nationwide

PhD programs than any department in any university in Alabama. We provide a wide range of hands-on research activities for our students, including a broad range of laboratory opportunities as well as the possibility of fieldwork at remote sites such as the Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, and Antarctica. Our graduate students go on to distinguished careers in many fields and win national prizes for their research. So come on inside our page. Look around. Feel the excitement. Congrats to the Amslers!

Congratulations to Dr. Charles Amsler, professor emeritus in the UAB Department of Biology, and Maggie Amsler, a former Biology research associate, on receiving the 2025 Scientific Diving Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. The honor recognizes their more than 40 years of collaborative work as scientists and scientific divers.

Dr. Mickie Powell and Dr. Steve Watts have published research in the AJPM Journal, the official open access journal of the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research and the American College of Preventive Medicine. Drs. Powell and Watts worked in partnership with Dr. Greg Kennedy of the Heersink School of Medicine on this interdisciplinary project. The team’s research, “Evaluating the Association of Anxiety, Depression, and Diet With Gastrointestinal Pain in Young College Adults,” explores the rise of students experiencing gastrointestinal issues.
