Last month, Pope Francis issued a public apology on behalf of the Catholic Church for its role in Canada's "catastrophic" residential school systems. In his article "Beyond Apologies: Children, Mothers, Religious Liberty, and the Mission of the Catholic Church," CCLE Director David Smolin addresses the wrongdoing of residential schools and the unjust treatment of single mothers from religious liberty and theological perspectives.
