The Department of Exercise Physiology at the University of Mary offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, a Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology, and a minor in Wellness. The Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science offers a 2.6, 3 and 4 year curriculum plan. A Wellness minor helps diversify students and develops skills in addressing population intervention plans. The Master of Science Clinical Exercise Physiology Program is a 2-year program of study. It is designed to advance students' knowledge regarding the function of the human body in the presence or absence of disease, in response to exercise or lack there of. Students are prepared to work in settings of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, supervised exercise where participants have clinical conditions for which exercise is indicated (i.e. cardiac, pulmonary, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, obesity, osteoporosis, metabolic disorders, multiple sclerosis, etc.) community fitness, corporate wellness, occupational health, athletic enhancement facilities including strength and conditioning, and higher education. โ€œExercise moreโ€ is good advice.

But for someone living with cardiovascular disease, cancer, pulmonary disease, diabetes, or another chronic condition, exercise may need to be much more individualized.

Thatโ€™s where the Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) comes in.

CEPs use exercise testing, clinical information, functional capacity, symptoms, and individual goals to help develop safe and effective exercise prescriptions.

Think of exercise like a prescription:

๐Ÿƒ Mode: What type of exercise?

๐Ÿ“… Frequency: How often?

โฑ๏ธ Duration: How long?

๐Ÿ“ˆ Intensity: How hard?

๐Ÿ”„ Progression: When and how should it advance?

โค๏ธ Monitoring: How is the individual responding?

The goal isnโ€™t simply to get people moving. Itโ€™s to help provide the right exercise, at the right dose, for the right person.

Clinical Exercise Physiologists help bridge the gap between healthcare and exercise.
