More Than A Number
by Ron C. Nischwitz Sr.

We say it often because it matters...
"We need Masons, not members."...
A member is simply a name on a roster...
A Mason is a man who chooses the work...
who shows up...
who grows...
who strives...
and who honors the obligations he took upon himself...
A member fills a seat...
A Mason strengthens the Lodge...
When we commit ourselves to making Masons...
to shaping character...
deepening understanding...
and nurturing the bonds of true Brotherhood...
our Lodges become places of purpose...
not just attendance...
The Craft becomes alive again...
And the Light we carry shines brighter in our homes...
our communities...
and in the hearts of the men who walk beside us...
So let us return to the real labor of the Craft...
mentoring with intention...
learning with humility...
supporting one another with sincerity...
and living our obligations with integrity...
We do not grow by counting heads...
We grow by raising men...
men of character...
men of service...
men who strive to be worthy of the title Mason...
That is the work...
That is the calling...
And that is how the Craft endures.

There is a quiet danger in always believing we are right.

Not because confidence is wrong…
but because certainty can close the door to growth.

Freemasonry, at its core, is a journey, not of proving ourselves right, but of refining ourselves through learning, reflection, and humility.

The Entered Apprentice begins in darkness, not because he knows nothing, but because he must be willing to admit he does not know everything.

That is where true learning begins.

A man who listens, learns.
A man who questions, grows.
A man who remains teachable… improves.

But the man who believes he has nothing left to learn has already stopped progressing.

The working tools we are given are not just symbols, they are reminders: To chip away at ignorance, to smooth rough edges, to build not only knowledge… but understanding.

So ask yourself

Do you seek to be right?
Or do you seek to become better?

Because one builds ego…
the other builds character.

And only one of those belongs in a Lodge.

In Memoriam: VWB Jerry Buchner

With heavy hearts that we announce the broken column or our beloved brother VWB Jerry Buchner, a distinguished Freemason who dedicated his life to service, brotherhood, and the principles of our ancient craft. His legacy will forever resonate within the hallowed halls of Diamond Lodge #83.

Biographical Highlights:

Worshipful Master (2010-2012): VWB Jerry Buchner’s tenure as Worshipful Master of Diamond Lodge #83 was marked by unwavering commitment to the lodge’s growth, harmony, and enlightenment. Under his leadership, the lodge flourished, fostering camaraderie among brethren and nurturing the flame of Masonic knowledge.

District Deputy (2012-2014): VWB Buchner extended his influence beyond the lodge walls, serving as District Deputy for District 13 for the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Washington, earning him the distinguished title of Very Worshipful Brother. His tireless dedication to the craft and mentorship of fellow Masons left an indelible mark on the entire district.

Masonic Journey: VWB Jerry was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on May 22, 1979 in Gardena Moneta Lodge No. 372, CA., F&AM. VWB Jerry was a 45 year member of the fraternity in good standing until his passing. VWB Jerry Buchner exemplified the tenets of Freemasonry: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. His commitment to charitable endeavors, community service, and the pursuit of wisdom embodied the very essence of our ancient order. Whether in ritual work, lodge administration, or fraternal gatherings, VWB Buchner’s presence radiated warmth and wisdom.

Final Farewell: As the sun sets on VWB Jerry Buchner’s earthly journey, we raise our working tools in salute. May the Grand Architect of the Universe welcome him to the Celestial Lodge above, where the trestle board bears eternal truths, and the light of Masonry shines undimmed.

Funeral Arrangements: Details regarding the memorial service and funeral arrangements will be communicated by Diamond Lodge #83. Let us gather to pay our respects and celebrate the life of a beloved Brother.

In Memoriam, VWB Jerry Buchner. Rest in peace, faithful servant of the Craft.
