As holiday and semester breaks approach, many families are beginning to plan their students' travel arrangements. Virginia Tech Sustainable Transportation (https://getaround.vt.edu/index.html) encourages parents and families to explore transportation options early and avoid last-minute bookings, which can be more expensive and limited in availability. Information below is intended to help families identify affordable, convenient, and reliable ways for students to travel home or reach other destinations.
Within Blacksburg and the local area:
- Blacksburg Transit (BT) (https://ridebt.org/) is the local bus system that services Blacksburg and Christiansburg. Passengers can also use BT to make connections to other bus lines, with routes connecting to Radford, Roanoke, and the Greater Washington, D.C. Area. BT is fare free for all riders.
- The Smart Way Bus (https://www.valleymetro.com/) provides service between the Roanoke Valley and the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus (including the Blacksburg-Roanoke Regional Airport) (https://flyroa.com/) for free with a Hokie Passport. Families should note that the service does not run on Sundays.
Around Virginia and beyond:
- Sustainable Transportation maintains a Regional & Long-Distance Transportation Options webpage (https://getaround.vt.edu/getting-to-vt/regional-and-long-distance-travel.html) that can help families identify bus and train options based on their studentβs destination and home state. These services often provide convenient and cost-effective alternatives to driving.
Carpooling Opportunities:
- Students can take advantage of free carpool matching through ConnectingVA (https://connectingva.agilemile.com/vt). The application makes finding carpool partners easy by maintaining a database of people who are interested in carpooling. Membership (https://connectingva.agilemile.com/vt) is free and provides access to carpool matching, a Guaranteed Ride Home program, contests, incentives, and more.
