As we close out and , we have one more ME undergraduate internship to highlight!

Sophie Evans, Engineering Intern at James Hardie in Pulaski, Virginia
- The job: Learning and improving the process of predictive and preventative maintenance in a fiber cement siding plant. Focusing on the usage of vibration analysis to find defects in bearings proactively.
- What I brought: An ME major with a biomedical engineering minor, leadership from my time in the Marching Virginians 🥁and team experience from my time with Quality of Life Plus, as well as SolarCar at Virginia Tech. 🚗
- Why it matters: Unscheduled delays occur when issues within bearings, motors, pumps, and gearboxes are not always detected before failure. Predictive maintenance prevents these reactive, unsafe, and costly delays.
Where I found the job: LinkedIn.

Our ME students really are interning across the Commonwealth this summer - from the coast to the New River Valley mountains as we celebrate .

Nathaniel Whipple, Design Engineer Intern at Moog Inc. in Christiansburg, Virginia
- The job: Digital analysis of cooling pumps to find where they work well and where improvements can be made.
- What I brought: Coursework through my ME major in material failure and some major math skills.➗
- Why it matters: I found some failure points that were previously unknown, valuable information for making reliable pumps. The data I’m creating will also be used by both customers and engineers after my internship ends.
- Where I found the job: Using the company’s products in a previous co-op.👔

Alexander Read, Engineering Intern at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia
- The job: Inner mechanisms of aircraft carrier elevator design that works better, using the newest materials.
- What I brought: A double major in ME & robotics and boat knowledge from 4 years of membership in the Virginia Tech Sailing Club. ⛵
- Why it matters: Analyzing the stress and strain on an aircraft carrier elevator means we can make stronger ships. Working with professionals who bring decades of experience to the table gives insight into design that can’t come from anywhere else.
- Where I found the job: Engineering Expo. 🧑‍💼

- The job: Air vehicle simulation sponsored by a Department of Defense organization.🗽
- What I brought: A double major in ME and computer science and a minor in math, loaded with knowledge of programming, fluid dynamics, controls, and virtual simulation.
- Why it matters: This work could produce new tools for national defense.
- Where I found the job: Word of mouth from friends.🗣️

Collin Burgess is a Junior Mechanical Engineer at Electra.aero in Manassas, Virginia
- The job: Design and analyze thermal subsystems of Electra's EL9 hybrid electric aircraft. ✈️
- What I brought: Solid skills in MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape to create digital models; knowledge picked up in thermodynamics class; and valuable experience from time on the VT 3D-printed aircraft design team.
- Why it matters: Airflow makes a better experience for the passengers, and keeping the batteries cool is essential for energy efficiency.
- Where I found the job: I reached out to the company. 🤝
