Viruses that jump from wild animals to humans have caused pandemics and deadly disease outbreaks for thousands of years. Virginia Tech scientists in the College of Natural Resources and Environment are working to figure out how that happens.

Luis Escobar, associate professor in CNRE, uses molecular laboratory analysis and global data to map hantavirus transmission risks and prevent future spillover events.

John Seiler Ph.D. ’84, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Forest Biology and expert in tree physiology in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, has been conferred the title of Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

Throughout his 45 years at Virginia Tech, Seiler has made lasting contributions to forestry education and research, from teaching generations of students in dendrology to helping pioneer the vTree app for tree identification. Known as “Dr. Dendro,” his impact extends far beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to Dr. Dendro on this well-deserved recognition!

The National Weather Service office in Wakefield, Virginia, is a Hokie haven. Congratulations to Jennifer Gagnon and her team at the Virginia Forest Landowner Education Program (VFLEP) for winning the 2026 Family Forests Comprehensive Program Education Award from the National Association of University Forest Resources Program and the National Woodland Owners Association. The selection recognizes the breadth and sustained impact of the program’s work on behalf of Virginia’s family woodland owners. The review committee was especially impressed by the team’s long-standing collaboration, diverse educational programming, applied research, and demonstrated success in helping landowners make informed forest management decisions. CNRE officially rang in the new academic year with the annual Welcome Back Bash on Thursday. Over 400 students and faculty met to catch up, enjoy a meal, and pet friendly dogs. Led by instructor Dave Carroll, the weather instrumentation course hit the ground running early this semester. Students traveled to the Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia, to install a weather station supporting the Allegheny Front Migration.

Each fall, migratory birds are captured, banded, and released at the site. Weather data is an important part of understanding the impact of migration patterns and banding success at the observatory.

Part field work, part online training, students learn everything from wiring, solar power, and sensors to building a weather station from the ground up.

Through the course, students put their classroom learning into practice while exploring the connections between meteorology, wildlife, and field research.
