Longtime community philanthropists, H. Pat and Nancy E. Artis have made a $5.1 million commitment to VCOM-Virginia to support scholarships, building on their previous support that has already benefitted at least 20 VCOM students. In recognition of the couple’s extraordinary commitment, the campus will name its new Health Sciences Education Building in their honor. VCOM-Virginia is deeply grateful to them, and we can't wait to see the impact their generosity will have on Southwest Virginia healthcare.

Our recent Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) workshop brought the spirit of the season to campus with a clinical skills-based “scavenger” hunt and a festive costume contest!

We were excited to welcome workshop leader Abraham Hardee, III, DO, PhD (VCOM-Virginia Class of 2007), Program Director of the Lewisgale Family Medicine residency and a board-certified family medicine physician with LewisGale Physicians, along with resident physicians from the LewisGale Hospital Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program, who assisted in providing students with valuable hands-on learning experiences.

VCOM is grateful for opportunities like these that connect our students with practicing physicians and provide valuable opportunities for developing clinical skills, fostering mentorship, and making learning memorable, even when there’s a little fall fun involved!

From specialty-focused groups and service initiatives to research opportunities and wellness organizations, our student organizations are an important piece of the VCOM-Virginia family as we strive to enrich each other and our communities.

This year's student organization fair was thriving and full of opportunities for students to discover new passions, develop leadership skills, build meaningful connections, and explore pathways that enrich both their personal lives and future medical careers.

Ahead of the VCOM-Virginia Class of 2030 White Coat Ceremony, U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel Clark and U.S. Army SFC Avila Flores administered the oath of office to Jillian Gray '30 as she was sworn in as an officer in the U.S. Army

Jillian is one of several VCOM-Virginia students serving in the military through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), which provides financial assistance for her medical education and the opportunity to serve as an Army physician after graduation.

Join us in congratulating Jillian on this exciting milestone as she embarks on a future of service in medicine and the military! 🩺🇺🇸

In just a few hours, the Class of 2030 will wear their white coats and reach the first major milestone on their med school journey! We are so proud of the effort they have put into their classes and fostering community on the VCOM campus. 🥼

Primary care doesn’t always begin inside a clinic.

Sometimes it starts at a community event, a health screening, or through outreach that brings care directly to the people who need it most.

As National Primary Care Week wraps up, we’re celebrating the future physicians learning that service, connection, and showing up for a community can make a lasting difference.

As a child, Hassan sometimes struggled to feel like he belonged in his community. But when he needed medical care, he remembers feeling welcomed, understood and cared for without judgment. That experience stayed with him.

“I want to be able to be a part of everybody’s healthcare, but treat them in a culturally appropriate way and treat them as a person,” he said.

Hassan, who grew up in Franklin County and Roanoke and attended Radford University, is part of the 87% of VCOM-Virginia’s Class of 2030 who come from Appalachian states.
