The VCOM-Virginia campus was filled with energy, community spirit, and plenty of strides for a great cause during the 2nd Annual Strides for Shelter 5K Run & Walk!

This meaningful event brings together VCOM, the CORE (Community Outreach, Research and Education) Program, and the housing and shelter programs of New River Community Action, Inc. to raise awareness and support efforts addressing shelter insecurity across Southwest Virginia.

Together, VCOM-Virginia raised over $1,700, thanks to our amazing participants and a substantial donation from Shelter Alternatives, Inc.

This event could not have occurred without the valuable time and effort of our CORE program members:

Elise Candelario
Allison Pham
Judith Cansler
Nabiha Faisal
Kamran Chodri
Taher Fanaeian

Thank you to everyone who ran, walked, volunteered, supported, and helped make this event a success! Your steps are helping make a difference in our community, where everyone deserves a safe and secure place to call home. ❤️

Tiffany Carpenetti, PhD, describes herself pretty simply. “I’m just a big nerd.” It’s an apt description for a woman who can talk enthusiastically about the beauty of a well-dissected network of intestinal arteries or the intricacy of the human hand. But before Carpenetti became an anatomist...

A Heartfelt Reunion ☀️

After seven years, VCOM has returned to El Salvador for a medical mission trip. We are proud of our students, faculty, and volunteers who made this journey a success, and would like to extend our gratitude to our hosts for their hospitality and kindness during our stay.

During their time in San Salvador, with supervision from our amazing faculty, our medical students held free health clinics and provided treatment to 560 patients. Our students left El Salvador with meaningful field experience and lifelong memories.

We look forward to our next visit!

After the tragic loss of a VCOM family member, our students, faculty, and staff came together to create a weeklong competition in his memory. Now, more than 10 years later, these games allow VCOM students an opportunity to connect, relax, and honor the memory of Frank Rocovich with the annual VCOM Olympics.

Since 2016, VCOM has held the Frank Rocovich Championship, an Olympic-style competition between our first- and second-year students. Each year, students participate in events to raise money for the Frank B. Rocovich Fund. This year, our students raised $1,500 to support future medical students at VCOM.
