Virginia Tech recently lost one of its preeminent scholars and educators, with the passing of James Michael “Mike” Duncan, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Virginia Tech Civil & Environmental Engineering.

For more than four decades, Mike was a defining figure in Virginia Tech’s world-class geotechnical engineering program. Christopher Dianora ’10, M.S. ’11 has a built a career with Delve Underground designing some of the world’s most complex underground infrastructure — from New York City’s water supply system to major tunnel projects in Australia.

His Virginia Tech education taught him to think beyond the textbook and that's something that has been invaluable in his underground engineering career.

Making drinking water safe means more than eliminating harmful microbes. Researchers also need to understand the chemicals created during treatment.

Doctoral student Kadmiel Adusei and Kirin Furst are studying alternative disinfectants and the byproducts they create.

This research earned national recognition with a second-place finish in the 2026 American Water Works Association ACE Fresh Ideas Poster Competition.

A new study aims to improve drinking water treatment by looking at how to reduce harmful disinfection byproducts without compromising water safety.

America’s rivers are changing the way they move sediment.

New research from Admin Husic shows that rivers are increasingly transporting sediment during shorter, more intense periods.

Heavier rainfall was the strongest predictor of increases in the amount of sediment rivers carry, while land-use changes, like urbanization and forest loss, were closely linked to the shift toward more concentrated sediment events.

Those intense bursts can affect drinking water treatment, aquatic habitat, reservoirs, erosion, bridges, and more.

New research shows that many U.S. rivers are shifting from steady sediment transport to concentrated pulses during major storms, a trend that could have widespread environmental and infrastructure impacts.

Eight Virginia Tech students traveled through England, Wales, and Scotland as part of the Bridges, Builders, and Society study abroad program, seeing some of the world’s most iconic bridges firsthand.

Along the way, they discovered that bridges can tell us a lot about engineering, history, culture.

The study abroad program Bridges, Builders, and Society uses iconic bridges in the United Kingdom to help engineering students understand how the structures reflect history, culture, and the communities they connect.
