Senior research scientist, William Lindsley, designed a DIY filtered-air breathing device that you can make at home to provide personal protection against hazardous particles in the air.

Linsey Marr got to be the first person to try to follow his instructions and make the device.

This project is funded by Coefficient Giving.

Our CEE student ambassadors have been out and about spreading the word about civil and environmental engineering! From Virginia Tech’s Fall Open House to the VT Majors Fair, they’ve been sharing their experiences, answering questions and helping students discover what makes CEE such an exciting field.

CEE students from Landon Marston's undergraduate research group are currently studying at the Steger Center in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.

They got the chance to present their work to water resources experts at Google in Zurich, Switzerland.

The topics they presented on were global cities, groundwater wells, inter-basin water transfers, and water governance.

With the current tropical cyclone activity, research into coastal flooding is especially timely.

Md Shadman Sakib, David Muñoz, Jennifer Irish, and Thomas Wahl from the University of Central Florida found that a hurricane doesn’t have to make landfall to cause flooding along the Chesapeake Bay.

They analyzed thousands of simulated tropical cyclones to understand how storm characteristics and rising sea levels could change flooding across the bay over the next 25 years.

The findings could help coastal communities better anticipate where extreme flooding may occur and prepare for the storms ahead.

Virginia Tech researchers used thousands of computer-generated storms to show how rising sea levels could amplify and reshape hurricane-driven flooding.

Virginia Tech’s team took the top spot in the Wastewater Division of the Water Environment Federation's Student Design Competition at WEFTEC 2026.

Competing against 10 other teams from across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, our students came out on top in one of the field’s premier student design competitions.

This also marks Virginia Tech’s first time placing first in in the WEF Student Design Competition.

Congratulations to our outstanding students and their advisors from civil and environmental engineering and Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering.

Pulling a 255,000-pound airplane by hand takes a serious team effort.

Our graduate students joined Delta Airport Consultants in Roanoke Saturday for the Special Olympics Virginia Plane Pull, helping a team of volunteers pull a Boeing 757-200 down the runway by hand.

And there was an extra Hokie connection - many members of the Delta team are former Hokies themselves.
