How does spaceflight change the way wounds heal?

Launching to the International Space Station on SpaceX CRS-35, this Virginia Tech and University of Virginia investigation uses sensor-integrated 3D tissue models to study how microgravity affects blood vessel formation and the structural network surrounding cells.

Space Tango’s automated CubeLab, which includes novel sensing technology from Professor Blake Johnson's Lab at Virginia Tech and tissue models from Professor Shayn Peirce-Cottler's Lab at the University of Virginia, measures tissue stiffening as researchers examine collagen production, cell behavior, and other changes involved in tissue repair.

Findings could inform research into chronic wounds, burns, and surgical recovery, while advancing tissue models for testing new therapies on Earth.
