We commonly discuss how nutritional factors and stressors may affect transition health and performance. However, less is known about how maternal factors affect offspring's health and development.

In this paper, we investigated how prepartal physiological conditions leading to postpartum affect offspring's growth and gut .

Key findings:
- Claves born to subclinical-ketotic (SK) cows had a lower growth rate than calves born to non-ketotic cows.
- Calves born to SK cows had a slow increase in the abundance of important taxa related to volatile fatty acid metabolism.
- By 3 weeks of age, SK calves had less diversity and evenness in their gut microbiome.

I'm so happy to see Anita Paz defending her MS thesis, "Rumen-protected methionine supplementation improves lactation, oxidative status, and immune response during a subclinical mastitis challenge in lactating dairy cows."

There is no doubt that without Anita's work ethic, attention to detail, and desire to go the extra mile, we wouldn't have got the exciting results we got from her research.

I cannot fail to express my gratitude to .michelotti and for being instrumental in Anita's research and professional development.

Congratulations Anita! Salud! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿพ๐Ÿบ

Congrats Ana on presenting her poster at . The First International Conference on Antioxidants: Sources, Methods, Health Benefits and Industrial Applications in Barcelona, Spain. Her poster is based on a meta-analysis looking at prepartal levels of liver glutathione (GSH) in and how this correlates with performance and health outcomes.

Great work! !!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฆƒ

Happy to be part of this webinar series Ammino Acid Balancing for Lifetime Performance, where I joined two long-time colleagues and friends, Dr. Luchini and Dr. Trevisi. We discussed the use of blood to understand biology and new data on the importance of antioxidants to improve cow performance and health. ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿฎ

Mylinda Hall presented her undergraduate project, "In vitro fermentation profiles to characterize postbiotic effects on rumen fermentation" during the Spring 2023 Capstone Symposium.

She had lots of fun this semester during fluid collections and lab work. Thanks to , , , and for your help with this project.

Congratulations Marcela!!๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿš€

She successfully defended her thesis, "In-vivo assessment of direct-fed microbial on lactation performances, blood biomarkers, ruminal fermentation and microbial abundance in transition to mid-lactation Holstein cows"

This was a tremendous effort as this was a year-long transition cow experiment with many challenges. She will present her research findings in two oral presentations during the next annual meeting in Canada.

Thank you to Dr. Elias Uddin for his help and guidance on this project.

Thanks to grad students and visiting scholars that helped in this research project...

Thank you and the Western Dairy Management Conference (wdmc.org), for the invitation to talk about transition cow biology. Too bad I got caught up in the bad weather in Reno, NV, but fortunately, I was able to give my presentation virtually.๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿ‘

New year new paper out! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฅ›๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฎ

We are glad to share our newest publication in Animals. This was a monumental effort led by . This publication adds to the growing knowledge of how bioactive metabolites in yeast culture can potentially modulate and liver function in transition .

We observed a simultaneous upregulation of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory genes in immune cells, which suggests a "controlled" inflammation in yeast culture-fed cows.
