VPI Cave Club

VPI Cave Club NSS [National Speleological Society] Student Grotto 000003. Established 1943. Caving club based in Blacksburg VA. πŸ¦‡

We meet at 7:00pm in Smyth 146on the Virginia Tech campus every Friday night during the regular semesters. Exceptions are during Spring and Winter breaks and during final exams. Meetings are open to anyone interested in learning about caves and caving. Most cave trips are planned at the meetings, so attending a meeting is the best way for a student to get underground. The trip leader will announce

the cave, the expertise level, what you'll need to bring, and the time and place of departure for the trip. If you cannot attend a meeting but want to go caving, please email the club's vice president. Many meetings include a caving-related program. These are often slide shows of recent caving excursions. This is a great chance to see what caving has to offer in other states and even other countries.

On March 3, Natural Heritage Karst Inventory staff Penelope Vorster and Wil Orndorff assisted Lori Schoenwiesner of DCR's office of Environmental Education and State Parks staff in delivering a Project Underground Workshop at Natural Bridge State Park. The workshop was attended by 28 State Parks interpreters from across Western Virginia. Project Underground, founded in Richmond in 1996, is a national environmental education program designed to promote awareness and knowledge of caves and karst. Workshop participants were introduced to cave and karst science and conservation, as well as several activities that could be shared with park visitor to have fun while they learned about this important part of Virginia's Natural Heritage. After a morning in the classroom, karst staff led workshop participants on a lantern tour of the Caverns at Natural Bridge, which was recently acquired by Virginia State Parks. The cave tour included observation and discussion of cave formations, underground waters, salamanders, wood rats, bats, and cave adapted invertebrates. Discussions within groups provided attendees with ideas about how to appropriately and effectively integrate science content into wild cave tours offered at several parks.

Thank you to and the National Cave Rescue Commission Eastern Region for putting on a very strong Level 1 Cave Rescue Training Course over Spring Break! The club sent six people to take the class, but the class itself was nearly half filled with VPI cavers. This could not have happened without the tremendous support from local VPI cavers.

It is truly a huge honor to train and practice cave rescue with the trove of knowledge and wisdom in our community.
