The third category we will be showcasing the from the GEO Photo Contest is "Postcards of the World". These photos showcase beautiful places that students visited during their travels with landmarks or landscapes that are easily recognizable as international locations.

The finalist for this category are:

- "Postcard From Lauterbrunnen" by Mairin Mockenhaupt
- "La Alhambra in Granada" by Evelyn Gazzola

Hokies Go Global Finalist

This photo was taken by Karina Kuratana while studying abroad with the Faculty-Led program "Hokies Abroad Antarctica - Humans and the Environment" this past winter semester. Kuratana, a sustainable biomaterials major with Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources and Environment and microbiology major with Virginia Tech College of Science, shows off her Hokie spirit while at Half Moon Island, Antarctica.

The title of this entry is "Let's Go... Penguins!" and the description is "Virginia Tech student in Antarctica smiling in front of a colony of chinstrap penguins. The student is holding a chinstrap penguin stuffed animal that is wearing a Virginia Tech shirt."

This photo was taken by Kaitlin Rath while studying abroad with the Faculty-Led program "Humans and the Environment " this past summer. Rath, a criminology, major with Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, shows off her Hokie spirit while at the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Take learning to Malawi with our faculty-led study abroad program. Through CEM 3074: Global Design & Construction for Sustainable Development, you’ll work alongside community members to build sustainable homes, supported by a local nonprofit. Develop teamwork, leadership, and project management skills while exploring global housing challenges and learning across cultures.

Open to all Virginia Tech students and fulfills Pathways 6D for most majors. Check with your advisor and apply by December 1 through the Virginia Tech Global Education Office.

Hokies Go Global Finalist

This photo was taken by Claudia Cave while studying abroad with the Faculty-Led program "Rockin' the Alps", based out of the , last fall. Cave, a geosciences major with Virginia Tech College of Science, shows off her Hokie spirit while at Capaccio Paestum SA, Italy.

The title of this entry is "Hokie With a Water Buffalo" and the description is "Near the ruins of Paestum in Italy, which we visited as part of our Geoarchaeology course, is a water buffalo farm called Tenuta Vannulo. Here, we learned about ethical agriculture practices and got to appreciate the animals that make the most delicious mozzarella! Pictured is me petting a water buffalo."

Hokies Go Global Finalist

This photo was taken by Mackenzie Harris while studying abroad with the Faculty-Led program "Economics of Tourism" this past summer. Harris, a financial planning and wealth management major with Virginia Tech Pamplin College of Business, shows off her Hokie spirit while at Zermatt, Switzerland on the Matterhorn.

The title of this entry is "Hokie at the Horn" and the description is "This is a picture of me (Mackenzie Harris) posing in front of the Matterhorn, a mountain in the Swiss alps. I am participating in the Economics of Tourism study abroad program, and we did a day trip to Zermatt, and took a gondola up the mountain to view the Matterhorn!"

Cultural Connections Finalist

This photo was taken by Margaret Mary Pace while studying abroad on exchange with the The University of Hong Kong (HKU) this past spring. Pace, a marketing management major with Tech Pamplin College of Business came upon this cultural connection in Kanchanbunari, Thailand.

The title of this entry is "Bathing with Elephants" and the description is "I had the opportunity to wash and bathe elephants, getting to interact with them up close. It was such a unique experience and one of my favorite memories from studying abroad."

In our latest VGC Faculty Spotlight, we’re featuring Eli Jamison and her experience using Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and Virtual Global Collaboration (VGC) to connect students across borders.

From navigating time zone differences to learning how cultural expectations can shape collaboration, Eli shares some of the challenges she encountered and what she took away from the experience. Now, she’s preparing for another COIL partnership in South America and looking forward to putting those lessons into practice!
