Experiential learning is more than theory — it’s intentional design in action.

At the Virginia Tech Howard Feiertag Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management Chef Lab, students don’t just study hospitality — they live it. Pamplin faculty have created an immersive environment where students take ownership of real-world culinary operations while applying lessons in budgeting, strategic planning, and team leadership.

“Our students are preparing for careers in hospitality, and in almost every area they’ll enter, they’ll encounter food and beverage,” said Dave Yanisko. “The goal of the course is to get our students acquainted with culinary operations while learning to problem-solve and communicate — which may be the most important thing we are doing in this lab."

By combining hands-on culinary training with industry-recognized certifications like ServSafe, the course reflects the Pamplin College of Business commitment to preparing students with both the competence and confidence to lead from day one.

R.B. Pamplin Professor Nancy Gard McGehee recently returned from North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where she led three research-oriented workshops with faculty and graduate students in the program. The gracious tourism faculty and administrators at NWU also hosted her on a game drive in a nearby preserve. Later, Nancy met with other Virginia Tech faculty and tourism Industry experts in Cape Town.

In addition to the academic experience, she learned other fun stuff like: did you know that a baboon’s bite is stronger than a lion’s? Don’t worry, no faculty were injured during the learning of this fun fact! Also, when a penguin molts, it takes 22 days. During that time, they cannot go into the water to feed, so they have a big gorge-fest before the molting starts (kind of like Thanksgiving!). Last one: when you see a warthog, don’t yell “WARTHOG!” if you want other people to see it as well. :-)

📆 Last week, students in HTM 3484: Socio-Cultural Impacts of Tourism, led by course instructor Dini Hajarrahmah, visited the Blacksburg Museum & Cultural Foundation (BMCF) / Alexander Black House — and they absolutely loved it! 🧡

👉 The visit offered a meaningful opportunity for students to connect classroom concepts with the local community right here in Blacksburg. As part of their assignment, “Reimagine Blacksburg Tourism,” students created one-day trips showcasing BMCF and reflected on the potential socio-cultural impacts their tours could have on the community.

A heartfelt thank you to the BMCF team — Executive Director Diana Francis, and Museum Exhibits & Events Assistant Allison Roach and Museum Assistant Kayla Crowder — for welcoming our students, giving them an engaging tour, and supporting this experiential learning opportunity. We look forward to continuing this wonderful partnership in future semesters! 👏
