The African Studies Program has long been recognized as one of the leading centers for the interdisciplinary study of Africa. We are committed to being one of the nation's leading programs for the interdisciplinary study of Africa. Our diverse research, teaching, and outreach activities promote greater understanding and appreciation of the continent and its people. We also promote the study of Africa in global perspective by cooperating with other area-studies programs, international centers, professional schools, and departments inside and outside Indiana University. All of our activities are conducted in accordance with our values stressing integrity, excellence, diversity, community, collaboration, and creativity.

Join us for Career Pathways featuring Katherine A. Ntiamoah, Director of Policy Engagement & Strategic Partnerships at the Hamilton Lugar School and former U.S. Diplomat.

Join us for the African Studies Monthly Social as we screen Heritage Africa, an award-winning Ghanaian film directed by Kwaw Ansah.
Set in colonial Ghana, the film explores identity, ambition, power, and the struggle to remain connected to one's cultural heritage.

This course will explore the early independence/post-colonial history and contemporary realities of Africa and Africans through an examination of Africa in film and on social media platforms. We will view and analyze media by African filmmakers and creatives. What can we learn about the continent, its recent history, and its global diaspora from the images and narratives that they create? We will take an Africa-centered perspective!

Did you know that by 2030, Africa’s youth are expected to make up 42% of the world’s population? Gain insight into the continent of YOUR future!

We will examine Africa’s role in shaping and being shaped by contemporary global history, international politics and economies, security, and cultural diplomacy.
