🌟 Student Spotlight: Barry Swigart 🌟

Barry Swigart’s journey is a powerful example of how experiential learning can lead to meaningful career opportunities. Through his work with Beck’s Mill in Washington County, Barry applied the skills he developed in Indiana University’s Parks, Recreation, and the Outdoors (PRO) Program to help preserve local history and support rural communities.

Barry will soon begin his first position with the National Park Service at St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.

Dr. Rebecca Lassell has been recognized by the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning Service-Learning Program with the 2026 Community-Engaged Learning Partnership Award.

Through a Sustaining Hoosier Communities course, Dr. Lassell led students in collaboration with the Orange County Community Gardens to design an ADA-accessible pathway. IU Health & Wellness Design PhD student Pezhman Raeisian Parvari was also recognized with the 2025–2026 Excellence in Community-Engaged Learning Student Award for his contributions to the project.

Dr. Evan Jordan recently served as a panelist at the Society of Behavioral Medicine Annual Meeting, contributing to a symposium titled "Ecological Momentary Assessment Across Middle to Late Life: Capturing Real-Time Data on Stress, Cognition, and Functioning."

Dr. Jordan’s presentation, Complementary or Contradictory? A Comparison of the Measurement of Daily Stress via User-Initiated Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and End-of-Day Recall (M-DISE), explored innovative approaches to measuring daily stress in real time.

At the 2026 NARRTC Conference in Washington, DC, Dr. Shu Cole presented the poster abstract “Gaps in Accessible Air Travel: Training & Beyond”. The conference brings together grantees of the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR).

The poster examined insiders’ perspectives on current accessibility training for airline employees, including its effectiveness, existing gaps, and opportunities for improvement. The research highlights the continued need for training that supports accessible, equitable, and respectful air travel experiences for people with disabilities.
The Accessible Airline Research Project at Indiana University is funded by NIDILRR, part of the Administration for Community Living at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
