You may have heard of the Japanese sewing traditions of sashiko and/or boro. Boro is the act of making hand-patched repairs to clothing and other household textiles, making them visible and adding strength and longevity. Sashiko is a technique of using thicker cotton thread with a running stitch in simple and complex repeating designs, adding a layer of beauty to boro repairs or, on its own, to samplers and household items.

In the first half of this workshop, we will make a coaster using sashiko. For the second half, we'll use clean textile items from your home that need repair or that you’d like to decorate with a sashiko patch, such as a garment, dish towel, or tote bag!

Learn to draw the portrait from a live model in this focused one-week studio experience led by local artist and instructor, Rebecca Woodward. Through guided demonstrations and extended studio practice, adult learners of all levels will learn a clear, step-by-step approach used by traditional artists to achieve likeness through expressive portraiture.

Over the week, participants will develop a sustained portrait, progressing from a simple block-in to refined forms and values. The class concludes with a group critique where students reflect on their work, discuss challenges, and identify strategies for continued improvement. Students will leave the course with a completed portrait and a repeatable process for approaching longer studies from life.

Heroes, villains, fantastic friends, and foes - dream them up and then build them from the ground up in this 1-week character design camp! This middle school camp will start with a variety of basic drawing techniques using paper and pencil to build a solid foundation. Then, you’ll take your character into the digital realm with open-source (free) graphic art software that’s always available. Beyond drawing, you’ll learn how to create more complex and believable characters, and the entire worlds in which they live!

Who doesn’t love a bowl of noodles? At this camp for middle and high school participants, we will make all sorts of noodle dishes inspired by global flavors, such as Japchae, Cacio e Pepe, Pad Thai, and Mei Fun, in the professional kitchens of Ivy Tech’s Culinary Arts & Hospitality Administration Program. While our noodle dishes can easily be made gluten-free and all are vegetarian, some ingredients we may not be able to substitute without losing the dish’s deliciousness, such as soy sauce, nuts, garlic, and cheese. This camp is for the adventurous eater!

Over time, chronic stress can erode our physical and mental health, cognitive functioning, and vital relationships. In this course, participants explore how to access the body’s innate capacity for balance to find calm and healing amidst life’s pressures. With the guidance of a certified facilitator, participants learn about and practice powerful techniques for stress management and autonomic nervous system regulation. Skills learned include soft-belly breathing, guided visualization, self-directed relaxation, self-expression through drawing, prompted journaling, moving meditation, and more!

“Eat food, not too much, mostly plants,” is the famous mantra from author Michael Pollan for a healthy, sustainable diet. In this cooking camp for middle and high school participants, you'll learn what that can mean through exciting plant-based meals each day that go beyond a mixed greens salad, all made in the professional kitchens of Ivy Tech's Culinary Arts & Hospitality Administration Program. We will explore the versatility of the mighty king oyster mushroom, so this is not a camp for the food-squeamish!
