383 athletes, 39 volunteers, and 397 prescription eyewear items later, the Indiana University School of Optometry Special Olympics Opening Eyes program was a success. 👓👟
This past June, thanks to support of School of Optometry faculty, students, staff, alumni and community volunteers, nearly 400 athletes received free vision screenings and eyewear this summer as part of the School of Optometry's Special Olympics program. Volunteers distributed 50 pairs of plano sunglasses at the event and ordered 397 prescription eyewear items, including prescription dress glasses, recreational glasses and prescription swim goggles, for athletes who needed them.
"This experience reinforced the importance of compassion and building genuine connections with patients," said rising third-year optometry student Rachel Ludwick.
