The O’Neill School of Public and Environment Affairs (SPEA) works to build a better world by stewarding the development of equitable and inclusive societies, democratic governance, and a healthy, sustainable environment. Today, we proudly honor Oksana Markarova, MPA’01, with the O’Neill School’s 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award—our highest honor for graduates.

A former ambassador of Ukraine to the United States and former minister of finance of Ukraine, Markarova has demonstrated exceptional leadership in public policy, international finance, and diplomacy. Her commitment to transparent governance, democratic reform, and international partnership exemplifies what it means to lead for the greater good.

Markarova will receive the award today during the O’Neill School’s Washington, D.C., Colloquium at the IU Capital Campus.

Join researchers, policymakers, environmental professionals, and community partners at the Indiana PFAS Network Fall 2026 Meeting on October 30 at Lilly Auditorium at IU Indianapolis.

The gathering will bring together stakeholders to discuss evolving PFAS regulations, statehouse developments, and the latest research on protecting public health, communities, and the environment. Join us on Thursday as Kimberly Novick, professor and Paul H. O’Neill Chair in the O’Neill School, delivers the 2026 Sonneborn Lecture, “The crucial role of forests in regulating global climate change.”

Named the 2026 Tracy M. Sonneborn Award recipient, Novick will explore how forests shape our climate, why their future role is uncertain, and what that means for climate mitigation and adaptation.

The connections Emily Mark-FitzGerald built as an O'Neill Arts Administration student have traveled with her throughout her career—and across oceans.

Now a professor at University College Dublin, she's helping a new generation of students experience the international cultural immersion that helped shape her own career through the MAAA-MACPAM dual degree.

“I just think the buzz that people get with engaging in creative work never goes away. It's a real pleasure and a privilege for our students to actually be the people who make it all happen.”
