The O’Neill School of Public and Environment Affairs (SPEA) works to build a better world by stewarding the development of equitable and inclusive societies, democratic governance, and a healthy, sustainable environment. ☀️ Summer Internship Spotlight ☀️

This summer, Maggie Bequette, MSES’26, served as a Seasonal Natural Resources Technician with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians’ Kowabdanawa odë kė (“They watch over this land”). Here’s what she shared about her experience:

“I spent my internship with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians’ Kowabdanawa odë kė (‘They watch over this land’). As part of the natural resources, wildlife, and conservation team, I worked in the field with a group to work on some grant-funded research. At that time of year, we were primarily focused on surveying lepidopterans (butterflies and moths), and later in the season would be surveying freshwater mussels and wild rice.”

When Devyn Keller studied lobbying in Prof. Baggetta’s U.S. Policy and Administration course, she didn’t know she’d immediately have an opportunity to put what she learned into practice. On a trip to Washington, D.C., with her father, she found herself using her new skills to advocate for an issue she cares about.

This summer, Emilie Murr, MPA’27, is working as an intern in the district office of State Representative Hillary Cassel. Here’s what she had to share about her experience so far:

“I am working as an intern in the district office of State Representative Hillary Cassel. In this role, I assist with constituent communications, organize and maintain office records, and attend community events. This experience is giving me firsthand exposure to public service and helping me develop professional communication and organizational skills.”

This summer, MPA-MIA student Kathleen Suelzer is working as a Visual Arts and Event Coordinator Intern with Lotus Education & Arts Foundation in Bloomington. Here’s what she had to share about her experience so far:

"This summer I have had the privilege to work with an amazing team at Lotus Education & Arts Foundation in Bloomington. We have been preparing for the 33rd world music festival that is set to happen this fall in October. I have been able to assist with preparing artist accommodations, working on our marketing campaign for social media, lantern workshops for festival decor, as well as working on a grant application for funding.”
