Indiana Delta Upsilon Mourns the loss of Brother Pete Yoder

Peter W. Yoder died peacefully at home July 10, 2026, in Bloomington, IN after a three-year battle with Bulbar Onset ALS. He was surrounded by friends and family days before and at the time of his passing.

Pete was born in South Bend, Indiana, September 20, 1947, to Dr. and Mrs. A.C. Yoder (Glenace Summers). He was a 1966 graduate of Goshen High School. He received both his BS and MS degrees from Indiana University. In 1975 he married the love of his life, Amee (Bordner). He retired from Indiana University in 2011 after a 40-year career with the IU Alumni Association. Pete served in the US Army Reserves from 1971-77. He was an active member of the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church serving on many committees and volunteer activities. He dedicated countless hours as the financial anchor to SMUMC as well as being a "heavy lifter" at the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. He also was a member of the Delta Upsilon social fraternity, the Elks 446 lodge, and the American Legion. Pete served for many years on both the Indiana Chapter of Delta Upsilon Alumni Corporation Board and the Wrangler Foundation. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis, jogging, traveling and listening to jazz. When he had to give up his many activities, he reported that more difficult than giving up jogging, tennis and golf was giving up his volunteer work at HHFB. He was an avid IU sports fan attending many of IU’s sporting events.

He was an IU football season ticket holder every year since 1967 except for one year when serving in the US Army.

BUILDING BETTER MEN: IU Chapter Update

Dear Indiana Delta Upsilon Alumni and Friends,

On behalf of the Alumni Association and the broader Indiana Delta Upsilon community, I am pleased to share a brief update after a busy summer.

We are beginning anew. After a three-year absence, DU began returning to the IU campus in August. Delta Upsilon International Fraternity (DUIF) is leading the Chapter’s restart by recruiting new associate members and preparing for its installation as an “Associate Chapter.” The plan is for DUIF to return responsibility for the Chapter to us, the alumni, by 2027. We will then guide and mentor the Chapter’s leadership.

To support that transition, we established a nine-member Alumni Advisory Board this summer, chaired by Dan Ladendorf. Each advisor will be paired with a Chapter officer and follow a clearly defined mentoring role. These positions require regular in-person Chapter visits and weekly check-ins by phone, text, or email. The Alumni Association intends to maintain the nine-member board beyond the Chapter’s re-establishment, and alumni can serve in other advisor roles even if they do not live nearby. In July, DUIF appointed Axel Hoge, Arlington ’25, as Delta Upsilon’s Senior Leadership Consultant for the Indiana University reestablishment effort. He graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Cinematic Arts. As an undergraduate, he served his chapter as vice president of external affairs, administration, and academics. Since joining DU’s staff in September 2025, he has supported recruitment, chapter development, and expansion. Axel relocated to Bloomington in Late August and will be on site through the first semester.

Within a short time, Axel met with dozens of prospective members. On September 1, he hosted more than 50 prospects and about a dozen Alumni Board members and advisors. After a brief presentation on Delta Upsilon, he led a panel discussion about our aspirations and expectations for the new members and Chapter. We were impressed by the quality of those who attended.

The results have exceeded our expectations: As of September 24, we have 46 accepted bids, and our goal is 50 by the end of the semester. Over the past two weeks, the undergraduates have taken a more active role in recruitment and have been meeting regularly with interested students. We are confident we will have a strong spring class and can fully occupy the house in fall 2027. The next phase will help this founding group take ownership through associate member education, officer selection, and regular Chapter meetings. Education began on September 21, and the first officers will be selected by October 5.

The formal ceremony installing the Associate Chapter will take place on Friday evening, October 23, 7 PM Whittenberger Auditorium. Alumni are invited to attend; please contact Axel Hoge at [email protected] if interested.

IU Homecoming is Saturday, October 31st. You will receive an invite to event with details next week.

FROM BROTHER TOM SLIVOVSKY:
TO IU-DU BROTHERS who are in and around the CHICAGO region.

I received a call from the hospitality team at Shaw's Crabhouse in Chicago inquiring if we could verify our annual booking for their private Oyster Room for our gathering again this year.

They are apparently getting several requests from other parties for that date.

I'm sending a first note to anyone considering attending to let me know 'yes, 'no,' or 'maybe.' We have some time, since we have been a returning booking group for many years.

If we get a reasonable group of attendees (over 15-18 guys — we had over 24 last year), then we are good to go forward. Under 12 attendees, they are implying to me to give up the reservation. We have had a minimum spend in past years of $2500 for the room which we have covered easily.

If we get a good response in a few weeks, I will get another note out to confirm the event to all. If it is a go, then it would be a thought to book a hotel in the area for the night. To remind everybody, the Marriot Courtyard is right across the street from Shaw's on Hubbard Street.

Just a first initial reach out to everyone. BTW, that night will again be the Big Ten Conference Championship Game night, and you recall the room had a big-screen TV for our usage.

Hello Brothers — Dikaia Upotheke,

With our new bylaws approved and new Corporation Board members elected, we’ve taken an important step toward rebuilding the Indiana DU Chapter the right way. Now we’re entering the phase that will determine whether the chapter thrives long‑term — and we need alumni involvement to make that happen.

We are forming a Chapter Advisory Board to support the returning undergraduate chapter. These advisors will guide officers, reinforce DU principles, and help build a culture worthy Delta Upsilon. This is one of the most direct ways an alumnus can shape the future of DU at Indiana.

Advisors typically meet monthly with their officer (perhaps two hours / month), and should visit the Bloomington house regularly, so location will be important. DU International provides a full advisor manual, and both the Advisory Board and Corporation Board will support you every step of the way. We’re aiming for a diverse mix of graduation eras, so undergraduates benefit from broad experience and perspectives. The Board will be filling those roles by the end of July, so let us know by the 17th. It is our hope that we have lots of options for each role!

Your involvement now will not only strengthen the chapter, expand alumni networking, and help develop future Corporation Board leaders - but is important in how we want to move forward.

Hello Indiana DU Brother — Dikaia Upotheke,
I’m reaching out as a fellow Indiana DU alumnus (class of 1983) with information that’s important for all of us as we work toward returning a strong Delta Upsilon presence to the Indiana University Bloomington campus.
By now, you should have received emails and postcards from the Indiana DU Alumni Association (the Corporation Board). As you may have heard, IU has approved DU’s return to campus in Fall 2026, with re-occupancy of 1200 E 3rd St. planned for Fall 2027. Much of the board’s work this past year has been focused on making that possible with many discussions and negotiations between IU and the DU International Foundation.
As background, the chapter’s removal from campus stemmed from serious issues that moved far away from DU principles. The Corporation remains financially strong due to the current sorority lease, but the alumni governance structure needed modernization to support a successful and sustainable return.
Over the past year, the board has updated and strengthened the bylaws, including:
• restoring staggered terms and term limits
• requiring major issues to be presented to alumni for comment before the board votes
• adding stronger protections requiring a supermajority of alumni to close the chapter
Your vote matters, and we are asking brothers to support the updated bylaws and the slate of board candidates. In future years, we hope to have multiple candidates per seat — and perhaps you might consider serving.
We also must meet quorum requirements, so your participation is critical.
How you can take part:
1. Attend the Annual Meeting

This is the best way to reconnect and participate directly.
2. Submit a Proxy
If you cannot attend, you may assign your vote to any Corporation Board member. I can send you pre-formatted revocable or irrevocable proxy forms upon request.
3. Vote Electronically
You may also vote online using the instructions sent to you by email and mail. Please encourage any brothers you know to do the same.
If you plan to attend in person, please email our board secretary at [email protected] so we can plan appropriately. Many brothers will likely head to local establishments afterward.
