Three College of Arts and Sciences faculty members—Wendy Leutert, Filippo Petricca, and Dina Okamoto—will join the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) for 2026-27 while they advance their research projects. The IAS is the leading-edge center for curiosity-driven research, founded in 1930, and has been the academic home to great minds that include Albert Einstein, Hetty Goldman, Erwin Panofsky, and more.

What does it mean to live in a world increasingly haunted by the possibility of human extinction?

In his forthcoming book, Homo Terminus, the College’s Prof. Shane Greene explores that question through climate change, AI, mass extinction, and more—with anthropology, speculative thought, and a healthy dose of dark humor.

Inspired in part by Octavia Butler’s idea that “the only lasting truth is Change,” Homo Terminus asks how we might move beyond paralyzing anxiety and toward meaningful action in an uncertain future.

The book also features nine original works of art created through collaborations with artists, two of whom are former IU students.

IU Printmaking alum Raphael Cornford (MFA '16) collaborated with IU Anthropology Professor Shane Greene, artist Rossana Mercado Rojas, and IU Painting BFA alum Tevin Garcia to create the book "Homo Terminus," and an accompanying exhibition opening Friday, September 4 from 5-8 pm at the I I FELL Gallery, 415 W. 4th St. in Bloomington. (Cornford's work graces the book cover, below.) Artist/author talks begin at 6 pm.

The collaboration visualizes today’s global crises - from AI doom and global infertility to climate change and techno-utopianism - casting a speculative lens on widespread anxieties around human extinction and “end times” thinking. The book and artwork draw from an eclectic set of ideas, collections, and mediums (painting, illustration, collage) to think through the possible futures of human being.

This is the first of the Culture Night series put on by IU Cultural Studies Program and is also supported by IU Institute for Advanced Study, IU Department of Anthropology, IU AI & Digital Futures, and the City of Bloomington Arts Commission.

Ever wonder how a book can let you choose the story? Join the College of Arts and Sciences for our first Food for Thought webinar of the semester this Wednesday at 7 PM EST. "The Many Lives and Journeys of the Gamebook," by Professor Marco Arnaudo will be a lively look at interactive books and gamebooks, from ancient divination texts to Choose Your Own Adventure to today's global gamebook renaissance.

Professor Arnaudo will discuss the theory and strange history of this peculiar style of storytelling, including how gamebooks can offer unique narrative opportunities, foster inclusion and empathy, and be used in education, training, and real-life problem solving. Arnaudo will discuss how the materiality of the gamebook has paradoxically made it even more relevant in today's digital world.
