IU Printmaking alum Raphael Cornford (MFA '16) collaborated with IU Anthropology Professor Shane Greene, artist Rossana Mercado Rojas, and IU Painting BFA alum Tevin Garcia to create the book "Homo Terminus," and an accompanying exhibition opening Friday, September 4 from 5-8 pm at the I I FELL Gallery, 415 W. 4th St. in Bloomington. (Cornford's work graces the book cover, below.) Artist/author talks begin at 6 pm.

The collaboration visualizes today’s global crises - from AI doom and global infertility to climate change and techno-utopianism - casting a speculative lens on widespread anxieties around human extinction and “end times” thinking. The book and artwork draw from an eclectic set of ideas, collections, and mediums (painting, illustration, collage) to think through the possible futures of human being.

This is the first of the Culture Night series put on by IU Cultural Studies Program and is also supported by IU Institute for Advanced Study, IU Department of Anthropology, IU AI & Digital Futures, and the City of Bloomington Arts Commission.

The McKinney Visiting Artist series kicks off this semester with a lecture by Brandon Gunn on Friday, September 11. An active advocate for printmaking, Gunn has traveled the world promoting lithography and mentoring the next generation of printers. Since 2016, Gunn has been Education Director at the Tamarind Institute, a globally recognized center for fine art lithography in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also the owner of arcEditions, a premier U.S. maker of leather rollers.

Gunn has taught printmaking at IU Bloomington, Concordia University (Montreal), and Brigham Young University (BYU)-Idaho and has consulted with institutions including the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program (N.M.), Santa Reparata (Florence, Italy), and BYU to design studios, streamline workflows, and integrate lithography into their programs. He has also collaborated with manufacturers such as Takach Press (Albuquerque) and Cranfield Colours (Wales, UK) to develop and ensure reliable, high-quality materials for the field.

This summer, students from the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design have been working alongside community partners across rural Indiana through the Rural Placemaking Studio. Tuesday, August 25 from 5-7 pm at the Cook Center, meet these students and their community partners at a showcase of the projects they’re collaborating on. Focused on creative placemaking and community-driven design, these projects include murals, public gathering spaces, interpretive signage, historical displays, and community garden enhancements.
