Pennsbury High School and Upper St. Clair High School Teams were among the high school teams that competed in the Pennsylvania High School Speech League's State Championship Tournament on Friday-Saturday, March 15-16, 2024. The Bloomsburg campus hosted speech and debate competitors from 85 high schools that included more than 625 students and 200 high school coaches, judges, and teachers for the two-day event. The speech and debate competitions took place in every academic building on campus. Students competed in events such as Parliamentary Debate, Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Persuasive Speaking, Informative Speaking, Extemporaneous speaking, Poetry, Prose, and Dramatic Duo. Most of the high school students competing at the tournament had to qualify to participate in the tournament at regional PA High School Speech League tournaments held during January and February.

Bloomsburg has served as the host location for the PA High School Speech League Drama Festival and State Speech and Debate Tournament since 2017.

Dr. Neil Strine, Professor of Political Science and Site Director for the PA High School Speech League, and Jodi Fetterolf, Assistant to Dean James Brown and Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania High School Speech League served as the hosts for the tournament for Bloomsburg.

Dr. Hidalgo de Jesus’s Spanish 213 Latinix Contributions to the US class have been busy this semester learning about Latinix cultures. The students created a Bloomsburg University Latinix Mural, presented research topics on Latinix education, health and nursing, hospital issues, political issues, literature, supply chain ideas for Latinix companies, emigration, Latinix Children’s book writers, and telenovelas. Students also connected the culinary history of Latin American countries and Spain with the American adaptation of Latinix cuisine. The students made Gallo Pinto Rice (Costa Rica/Nicaragua), Spanish churros (Spain and American version), Cuban Sandwiches, Chicago Puerto Rican Sandwich El jibarito, Orlando Puerto Rican Tripletas, Peruvian Chaufa Rice (Chinese Rice). The students had also a Taco Night (Mexican and American tacos and tamalitos). Besides cooking, the students learnt how to make mock Latino cocktails: Mexican Margaritas, Pisco Sour (Peru and Chile), Cuban Mojitos (American/Cuban version), Mexican Hibiscus Tea, and Puerto Rican Piña Colada.
