Blue Mountain Christian University Announces Continued Excellence in Psychology Education Under the Leadership of Dr. Jeffrey A. Sweatt

Blue Mountain, Mississippi — Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU) proudly highlights the ongoing contributions of Dr. Jeffrey A. Sweatt, Ph.D., M.Div., Associate Professor of Psychology and long serving Coordinator of the Psychology Degree Program. Since joining the faculty in August 2005, Dr. Sweatt has shaped the academic and professional development of hundreds of students preparing for careers in psychology, counseling, ministry, and human services.

Dr. Sweatt teaches one of the most comprehensive psychology course loads in Christian higher education, offering instruction on ground and online courses. The Psychology Program at Blue Mountain Christian University blends solid academic study with a Christ-centered understanding of people, relationships, and daily life. Every course helps students see human behavior through both well-substantiated insight and the truth that every person is created and loved by God.

Introductory classes give students a strong foundation for understanding how people think, grow, and relate, while reinforcing Christian values like dignity, purpose, and compassion. Courses focused on children, adolescents, and families show students how faith shapes healthy relationships and caregiving. Whether studying child development, family dynamics, or the challenges teens face, students learn how Christian principles—love, patience, guidance, and grace—can strengthen homes, support children, and encourage Christ-like behavior in everyday life.

Specialized courses teach students to respond to human struggles with empathy and hope, reflecting Christ’s heart for those who are hurting. Social Psychology and Theories of Personality help students connect faith with daily interactions, identity, and community life.

Students consistently express how his approach impacts their lives. As one student shared, “Dr. Sweatt doesn’t just teach psychology—he shows us how to live it out with Christ at the center.”

Dr. Jeffrey A. Sweatt’s distinguished academic training and decades of professional experience allow him to offer students a uniquely integrated understanding of how psychology and Christian faith work together in real world settings. With advanced degrees in psychology, counseling, and ministry—and professional roles ranging from therapist and clinical supervisor to youth minister and international missionary, having served in Lusaka, Zambia—Dr. Sweatt brings a depth of insight that helps students see how their relationship with Christ can shape the way they care for others. His teaching emphasizes that showing God’s love is not limited to church settings; it is lived out daily in families, schools, counseling offices, hospitals, and community organizations.

In the classroom, Dr. Sweatt connects psychological theory with practical, Christ-centered compassion, helping students understand how Christian values guide healthy relationships, ethical caregiving, and behaviors that reflect Christ in everyday life. Whether discussing child development, family dynamics, or mental health challenges, he encourages students to view each person as created in the image of God and worthy of dignity, patience, and grace. His mentorship during internships and senior seminar further reinforces how faith can shape professional practice and personal calling.

“Dr. Sweatt’s dedication to academic rigor, student development, and Christian service embodies the mission of Blue Mountain Christian University,” said University President, Dr. Barbara McMillin. “His impact on our students and our institution is both profound and enduring.”

Blue Mountain Christian University celebrates this faculty member’s ongoing commitment to excellence and the transformative impact they have on students pursuing psychology as both a calling and a profession.

Construction Update | Center for Grace & Healing

Progress continues inside and out at BMCU’s Center for Grace & Healing! This week, crews continued installing millwork and lab casework on both levels, began painting lobby ceilings, installed interior storefront windows, and continued mechanical, electrical, and plumbing finish work.

Outside, work continued on site masonry, the ADA ramp and site walls, grading, and hardscapes, while installation of exterior lighting also began.

Next week, crews are scheduled to continue this work and begin installing baffle ceilings in the lecture hall.

We’re excited to see each week bring the Center for Grace & Healing another step closer to completion!

Pastor Will Livingston Reminds BMCU Community of God's Mercy and Grace

Students, faculty, and staff at Blue Mountain Christian University gathered for chapel this morning and heard a powerful and convicting message from Pastor Will Livingston of First Baptist Church, Mathiston, Miss.

Drawing from the example of the Israelites in the Old Testament, Pastor Livingston reminded the university community how God continually blessed His people, yet they often turned away from Him to serve other gods. He challenged listeners to recognize the parallels between Israel’s struggles and the spiritual challenges believers fall into today.

"Despite God's constant provision, protection, and blessings, the Israelites repeatedly wandered from Him," Livingston shared. "In many ways, we are no different. We, too, can become distracted and allow other priorities to take God's rightful place in our lives."

While his message called for self-examination, it was ultimately one of hope and restoration. Pastor Livingston emphasized the good news found in God's mercy and grace, reminding the audience that forgiveness is available to His children who repent and return to the Lord.

357 Physicals. 90 Minutes. Amazing Community.

Blue Mountain Christian University Athletics received tremendous support from the community during this year's athlete physical day, making the event one of the most successful in program history.

For the first time, Blue Mountain Christian University Nursing students assisted with athletic physicals, providing invaluable help throughout the process. Their participation helped streamline the event and allowed hundreds of student-athletes to complete their required physical examinations efficiently.

"It was amazing," said Athletic Director Curt Fowler. "They helped us do 357 physicals in an hour and a half which included doing all the weight, height and blood pressure measurements."

The impressive teamwork and organization enabled student-athletes to move through the process quickly while receiving quality care and attention. The nursing students gained hands-on experience working in a healthcare setting, while the athletic department benefited from their professionalism and dedication.

The success of the event was made possible through the efforts of numerous organizations and individuals who generously volunteered their time and resources. The athletic department extends its sincere gratitude to Specialty Orthopedics Group, Baptist Medical Group, Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Athletico, and the Blue Mountain Christian University Nursing Program for their contributions. Their partnership helped make the event free for student-athletes and their families.

"It amazes me every year that these local doctors, nurses, and rehab trainers donate their time so our students are provided with a true athletic physical," said Athletic Director Curt Fowler. "God has now blessed us with nurses on campus who not only helped us but hopefully will continue to help after graduation."

In addition, special recognition goes to the university's athletic training staff, Felicia Saulter and Kaitlin Horne, whose planning and coordination ensured that the event ran smoothly from start to finish. Their leadership brought together healthcare professionals, volunteers, and university personnel to provide an efficient and positive experience for everyone involved.

The 2026-2027 commissioning ceremony was a powerful reminder that big things often start small. Each student received a mustard seed, symbolizing faith, growth, and the incredible potential within them. Though tiny, a mustard seed grows into something strong and impactful, just as the seeds of knowledge, character, and relationships planted this year will flourish over time.

As we begin this new academic journey, may we remember that even the smallest steps of faith, dedication, and kindness can create lasting change. Here's to growing, leading, and making a difference in the world around us. 💛

The mustard seed also reminds us that we do not have to have everything figured out on day one. Great accomplishments are built through daily choices, steady perseverance, and a willingness to trust the process. What may seem like a small act today can become a lifelong legacy tomorrow.

Most importantly, this seed represents a calling to serve and impact others. As we learn, grow, and develop our gifts, may we use them to uplift our communities, encourage those around us, and leave a positive mark wherever we are planted. The future begins with the seeds we choose to sow today. 🌱✨
