The Creative Expressions class began with an exploration of what it means to express ourselves. Through a variety of engaging games and activities, students experimented with spoken, unspoken, and written forms of expression. From there, we began to explore a deeper question: What does it truly mean to be creative? ๐ŸŽจโœ‚๏ธ

Students listened to expert educators who emphasized the growing importance of creativity in todayโ€™s workforce. They discovered how critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and creative thinking are essential skills for success in the classroom and beyond.

To put these skills into action, students began working in collaborative groups on a creative problem-solving challenge centered around a candy factory. Each group was challenged to use their imagination to help save the factory by designing an exciting new candy and creating a model of a brand-new candy factory. ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ

The students also developed recipes for their candy creations and brought their ideas to life by actually making the candy in the classroom. They will participate in a taste test, sampling the different creations and voting for their favorite candy.

To conclude the project, each group will present its candy creation and candy factory model to the class. Students will reflect on their work and evaluate their creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and presentation skills using a project rubric.

This hands-on experience allows students to discover that creativity is much more than simply having a good ideaโ€”it involves imagination, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and the courage to turn an idea into something real! โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿซ

It has been an incredible first week in our Literacy Block courses at the Blue Mountain Christian University School of Education! โœจโœ๏ธ

Our future educators dove straight into content exploring the Science of Reading, theoretical models like Scarboroughโ€™s Reading Rope, and creating hands-on visual representations to bring the research to life. ๐Ÿชข

Students also designed and presented anchor charts focused on essential foundational literacy skills, including print awareness, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and phonics. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ““

We are so proud of their hard work and passion as they prepare to build strong, confident readers in their future classrooms! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŽ Growing Into Effective Future Teachers! ๐ŸŽ

Our student teaching interns kicked off their first seminar of the fall semester with a day filled with learning, reflection, and practical strategies they can take straight into their classrooms!

๐Ÿ™ Ms. Amber Richardson shared a meaningful devotion centered on meeting the needs of all learners. Using the examples of Paul teaching both Jews and Gentiles, she connected Scripture to the classroom through Acts 13 and Acts 17. Paul didnโ€™t change the messageโ€”he adjusted his delivery based on the people he was teaching. In the same way, our students come from different backgrounds, experiences, and learning styles, and effective teachers must be willing to adjust how they teach so that every learner has an opportunity to understand and succeed. The interns especially enjoyed the hands-on approach and the powerful connection between faith and teaching.

โš–๏ธ Mr. Sean Akins shared important information about school law and legal issues that student teaching interns need to understand as they enter the profession. His session provided valuable insight into the responsibilities and protections that come with being an educator.

๐Ÿ“š Ms. Young, Director of Clinical Experiences at BMCU, led discussions and modeled instructional and behavioral strategies designed to add practical tools to the internsโ€™ teacher toolbox. Throughout the day, interns experienced and then debriefed strategies such as:

โœจ Experiential learning
โœจ Debriefing and metacognition
โœจ Reflection
โœจ Anticipation guides
โœจ Social contracts
โœจ Think-Pair-Share
โœจ And many more!

The goal was not simply to talk about effective teaching strategies, but to experience them as learners, reflect on their purpose, and consider how they can use them with their own students.

What a great way to begin the semester! We are excited to watch these interns continue learning, growing, and developing into effective, reflective, compassionate educators who are prepared to meet the needs of every learner. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽ
