We’re midway through the first week of classes, but we couldn’t let the week end without welcoming our new and returning students. Welcome, Owls! 🦉

This semester, FAU Department of Special Education is celebrating several exciting milestones:

* Nearly 100 new master’s degree-seeking students joined our programs.
* We launched our new fully online Bachelor’s in Early Care and Education (BECE) degree.
* Coming soon: a new 4+1 pathway combining the BECE and M.Ed. in Special Education, allowing students to earn both degrees in just five years.

We’re excited for the semester ahead and all that our students will accomplish!

Join the FAU Department of Special Education in welcoming our newest Instructor, Dr. Amy Bukszpan! Dr. Bukszpan’s work bridges behavior analysis and sports, with a particular focus on behavioral artistry and compassionate care. Her research explores how these essential “soft skills” can be effectively taught and applied across the helping professions.

Here’s to a brand new school year! FAU College of Education hosted its annual “Welcome Back” event this afternoon.
The theme of the event was the sport of baseball, highlighting “Small Wins, Big Impact.” This year we are charged to acknowledge that the small gains (by all members of our “team”), are what will move us forward.

ABAI 2026. FAU Department of Special Education doctoral students Chinwe Ugwuozor and Riane Santa Cruz De Melo recently presented at the 2026 Association for Behavior Analysis International conference in San Francisco, CA.
Chinwe presented a poster titled The Prevalence of Autism Diagnosis in the United States and the Delayed Diagnosis Among Black Children; and, Riane presented a poster titled Behavior Analytic Caregiver Training: Bridging the Research to Practice Gap. Congratulations to them both.

Just prior to yesterday’s graduation ceremony, FAU College of Education hosted it's annual Honors and Awards Ceremony, taking the opportunity to celebrate 2025-2026 student and faculty awardees.

The Department of Special Education recently hosted an engaging doctoral information event highlighting our newly revamped Ph.D. in Special Education program. Attendees learned about exciting program updates, explored opportunities to generate and disseminate research, and discussed pathways to leadership and career transformation in special education.

Guests connected with faculty, current doctoral students, and future peers while enjoying light refreshments, door prizes, and swag. It was an energizing first step for many toward their future in special education leadership and scholarship!
