New artificial intelligence degrees combine hands-on research, industry partnerships and flexible learning options ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ’ป

University of Idaho is expanding its leadership in artificial intelligence education and research with three new degree programs designed to prepare students to build AI systems, solve industry challenges and meet growing workforce demand across Idaho and the Pacific Northwest.

Beginning in Fall 2026, students can pursue a bachelorโ€™s degree, masterโ€™s of science or masterโ€™s of engineering in artificial intelligence. Graduate programs are available fully online, and all three degree levels are available at the Moscow and Coeur dโ€™Alene locations. Programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on research and industry partnerships that allow students to build the AI tools to solve real-world problems.

โ€œThe U of I helped build the applied engineering, computational and interdisciplinary foundations that became important as AI matured into a real-world industrial technology,โ€ U of I President C. Scott Green said. โ€œOur students donโ€™t just learn how to use AI, they learn how to build AI tools and systems, teach computers to understand and generate language on state-of-the-art AI infrastructure and apply AI in the real world.โ€

According to the U.S. Department of Education, AI employment opportunities are expected to increase by 17.3% nationwide by 2034. In the Mountain West region, job growth is projected to be even stronger, with an anticipated increase of 25.5%.

New Boise farm incubator provides veterans hands-on training, mentorship and market opportunities

University of Idaho Extension is launching a new incarnation of its Harvest Heroes program in collaboration with the Farmer Veteran Coalition of Idaho and the City of Boise to prepare military veterans for careers in small-scale agriculture.

Extension is establishing a farm incubator for military veterans at Spaulding Ranch Park โ€” a 20-acre, historic homestead owned and maintained by Boise Parks and Recreation. Participating veterans will work alongside Extension to grow a market garden, receiving regular hands-on instruction from Extension experts, guest presenters and veteran farmer mentors.

More than 40 years after earning his undergraduate degree, University of Idaho Boise graduate student's commitment to both sides of education has never been stronger. ๐ŸŽ“

In May, Rick Gividen completed his masterโ€™s in leadership and organization development (LOD) through University of Idaho Boise. He spent almost 20 years serving in the United States Army and has been involved in teaching remote continuing education for various government agencies for another 25 years. ๐Ÿ’ป

Gividen has managed the Wildland Fire Learning Portal (WFLP), an online training tool used by federal, state, local and Tribal wildland fire workforces, for several years, including while studying for his masterโ€™s degree. The project he created for his comprehensive final exam, a video game-style quiz called Fire Behavior Face-Off, might solve the problem of how to better assess the current skill level of the wildland fire workforce.

โ€œThe knowledge Iโ€™ve gained from this program has been very applicable for my job and current responsibilities,โ€ Gividen said. โ€œThe entire experience has been amazing. I canโ€™t say enough about U of I, how proud I am to be a Vandal and how proud I am to have achieved my goal here.โ€

โš–๏ธ Summer externships are underway at Idaho Law! โ˜€๏ธ

Five University of Idaho College of Law students โ€” John Harris, Kalista Barkley, Gerardo Banuelos, Matt Dominick and Parker Barnhart โ€” recently joined other law students and completed onboarding for their summer externships with the Idaho Court of Appeals under the guidance of College of Law Adjunct Professor, the Hon. Jessica M. Lorello.

They are part of a remarkable group of 50 Idaho Law students from Moscow and Boise serving in externship placements this summer across Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah and Arizona, demonstrating the reach and impact of Idaho's law school throughout the West.

Practical training remains a defining strength of the College of Law.

During the 2025-26 academic year:
๐Ÿ“ˆ Approximately 150 JD students participated in fall, spring or summer externships โ€” a 10% increase from the prior year.
๐Ÿค 52 students participated in legal clinics โ€” a 33% increase from the prior year.
โš–๏ธ Students developed real-world legal skills while serving courts, organizations, employers and clients throughout the region.

Congratulations to all of our summer externs as they gain invaluable experience and represent Idaho Law in communities across the West! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค
