WSU’s expanding role in a Washington State Fair exhibit showcases how university research, technology and expertise support the state’s farmers and food systems.

Last year, more than 85,000 people visited the “Our Food, Our Farms, Our Washington” exhibit at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup.

“We are so excited about the chance to demonstrate the impact WSU has on agriculture in so many different ways to so many people,” says Katie Gziryan, director of public affairs for WSU Government Relations. “Farmers are working 365 days a year to make sure the world has the food it needs. This exhibit will help honor that work in a compelling and educational way.”

After spending five months using Paris as her classroom, Nicole Scoggins returned with greater confidence and a desire to help other students pursue experiences abroad.

“I want to be an educator in the future. I really just want to like, encourage students to travel outside of the U.S. I think it’s a very once-in-a-lifetime experience that changes everything for the better and just helps you grow in so many ways you didn’t imagine.”

More than three decades after Washington State 4-H brought Hanako Matusmoto into Melissa Nissen’s home, the pair reunited this summer through the same WSU Extension program.

“Reunions like these illustrate the extraordinary impact of youth exchange programs. What begins as a few weeks of cultural immersion can develop into lifelong friendships and extended families that span continents. We are proud of Washington 4-H and WSU Extension’s role in creating these transformative experiences."

Samantha Swindell has been named WSU’s vice provost for undergraduate education and will begin a phased transition into the role Sept. 21.

As vice provost for undergraduate education, Swindell will help shape the academic experience for undergraduate students across WSU. Partnering with deans, faculty, and student support teams, she will guide curriculum enhancements and policy improvements that support student success, expand access and opportunities for learning, and help create an educational experience in which every student can thrive.

Study shows climate factors such as rising temperatures and intensifying storms affect commercial fishers’ attitudes toward sustainability certification.

Ana Espinola-Arredondo, professor in the School of Economic Sciences, worked with colleagues at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, to model ecolabel certification in fisheries.

The study could help inform future policy on the gaps in certification as a reliable indicator of sustainability.

Spokane resident Darren Bass had been searching for answers as a stray kitten, Spot, struggled with puzzling symptoms that stumped veterinarians. Spot was diagnosed with a rare congenital liver defect known as a portosystemic shunt, which causes blood to bypass the liver instead of being filtered.

Referred to WSU College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital for specialized care, Spot underwent a complex and risky surgery to correct the defect.

“It’s just been a wonderful experience for me at WSU because I was so frustrated not being able to figure out what was going on with Spot. Without surgery, they said she probably would have lived only a few more years. But now she’s doing great, and I’m excited to see how much she continues to improve.”
