Hosted by our Micron Student Success Center, the Microelectronics Education and Research Center, and Boise State Career Services, and sponsored by Micron Technology β€” this event connects Broncos from ALL MAJORS with companies helping shape the future of the semiconductor industry.

π—‘π—²π˜„ π™‘π™€π™žπ™˜π™šπ™¨. π—‘π—²π˜„ 𝙀𝙭π™₯π™šπ™§π™©π™žπ™¨π™š. π—‘π—²π˜„ π™‹π™€π™¨π™¨π™žπ™—π™žπ™‘π™žπ™©π™žπ™šπ™¨.

This fall, Jannatun Nawer, Ph.D. joined Boise State as an Assistant Professor in Boise State Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, bringing expertise in high-temperature material processing, material characterization, and rocket science.

Nawer earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University and previously worked as a Technical Program Manager at Solvus Global LLC, focused on advanced additive manufacturing.

Notably, she's led three space-flight experiments with NASA, in collaboration with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency and the European Space Agency. At Boise State, she leads the High-Temperature Materials Lab (HTM), researching high-temperature material processing and alloy design for both in-space and industrial manufacturing applications.

Boise State research could reshape how next-generation batteries are made.

Boise State Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering Professor Hui (Claire) Xiong is leading a new three-year project, backed by the National Science Foundation, that reimagines battery electrode synthesis.

The payoff, if successful: batteries that charge faster, last longer, and hold more capacity. The project also connects students directly to Brookhaven, Oak Ridge, and Argonne National Laboratories, giving them rare hands-on experience in electrochemical processing few university labs can offer.

Our faculty secured nearly $8M NSF award to advance resilient microelectronics research β€” a major win for Idaho's semiconductor and defense innovation ecosystem.

The award establishes XTREME, Idaho's first NSF E-RISE project. Led by Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering's Professor David Estrada, the initiative unites Boise State, University of Idaho, three community colleges, BYU-Idaho, Micron Technology, and Idaho National Laboratory to investigate materials that can withstand extreme heat (1000Β°C+), radiation, and mechanical stress. Capabilities that are critical to next-generation energy, defense, and aerospace systems.

Congratulations to PI David Estrada, co-PIs Krishna Pakala and Brian Jaques, and the entire College of Engineering and university team on this milestone.

What does engineering leadership look like at Boise State University?

For the second consecutive year, a College of Engineering faculty member has been selected as an ELATES Fellow, a highly competitive national leadership development program in academic technology, engineering and science.

Congratulations to Krishna Pakala, associate professor of Boise State Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, our 2026-2027 Fellow. Pakala follows Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering's Hui (Claire) Xiong, who completed the fellowship in 2025-2026.

Back-to-back fellows from the same college are rare β€” and the recognition reflects more than individual achievement. It demonstrates the depth of leadership, research and educational talent being cultivated within the College of Engineering.

For our students, industry partners and the state of Idaho, investing in engineering education means investing in the leaders who will shape the technologies, industries and workforces of tomorrow.

Jacey Scott's passion for problem-solving started with backyard projects alongside her dad β€” and has grown during her time at Boise State University into a career shaping the infrastructure that keeps our communities safe and moving.

As a Boise State Civil Engineering student, Jacey combined rigorous coursework with hands-on involvement in WICED and internships with Jacobs. That foundation helped her earn the Simpson Strong-Tie Scholarship and a highly competitive spot in the company's fellowship program, where she toured manufacturing facilities, engaged with industry leaders, and connected with engineering students from across the country.

Jacey already has plans for what's next, continuing her focus on transportation engineering and earning her PE license. But she does have advice for students eyeing similar opportunities: "Apply even if you are unsure whether you will be selected...be genuine in your applications and highlight the experiences that have shaped who you are."

COEN Welcome | MCMR

Before their first day of class, hundreds of incoming Boise State University students from the College of Engineering were already doing what STEM professionals do: collaborate, design, and build.

Our π—–π—’π—˜π—‘ π—ͺ𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 experience for first-year students, introduced our newest innovators to the college and their future careers. Before they step foot in the classroom they've had the chance to build connections with classmates and collaborate with COEN Ambassadors who guide them to resources.

Those connections extended beyond campus with the help of Visionary Employer Partners. Our 6 industry guests joined students with many returning Boise State alumni and former COEN Ambassadors. Their participation gave our newest students an early opportunity to start designing a career alongside professionals who once stood where they are now.

These opportunities don't happen without people committed to building Idaho's talent pipeline right here at home. Thank you to our Micron Student Success Center, our COEN Ambassadors, ClΔ“nera, Curtiss-Wright, Hensel Phelps, Lumos and Associates, Perpetua Resources, WSP, and our faculty and staff who helped welcome our newest Broncos!
