It is with heavy hearts that Boise State University shares the passing of Dr. Lynn Russell, our founding dean.

Dean Russell led the College of Engineering through its establishment in 1997, guiding it through its first national accreditation process and overseeing the construction of facilities that remain the core of engineering education at Boise State today – the Harry W. Morrison Civil Engineering Building, the Micron Engineering Center, and the Ruch Engineering Building – while also playing a critical role in establishing the Idaho Microfabrication Laboratory.

Before his career in higher education leadership, Dr. Russell earned his degree in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University and his Ph.D. from Rice University, then worked as a NASA scientist contributing to the Apollo program. He went on to serve as Dean of Engineering at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Alabama in Huntsville before coming to Boise State. During this time he authored a thermodynamics textbook still used today.

On Thursday, October 22, Boise State's College of Engineering will host its final Career Fair of the fall semester, connecting employers directly with students across engineering, construction management, computer science, and STEM majors from across campus.

Hosted by the Micron Student Success Center, this event gives organizations the chance to meet motivated, career-ready Broncos who are eager to bring real skills to real teams. If you're building your pipeline for internships or full-time roles, this is where that search gets a lot easier.

Boise State Construction Management has named BJ Albertson as its inaugural Casey Cline CMA Fellow, a new endowed role honoring Professor Casey Cline's nearly 20-year legacy of building the Construction Management Association (CMA) into the top Associated General Contractors of America student chapter in the country.

The fellowship, established through a gift from the Construction Management Alumni Chapter, ensures CMA's community-based, industry-connected projects continue for the next generation of student leaders.

That's a wrap on the 2026 Construction Industry Career Fair!

Last week, 350+ students from Boise State Construction Management, Boise State Civil Engineering, Boise State Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and College of Business and Economics at Boise State connected face-to-face with employers eager to invest in the next generation of industry talent.

A standout moment: 30 high school students from Elevate Academy joined the fair, getting a firsthand look at the career paths available in construction and engineering — a reminder of the talent pipeline we're building well beyond the Boise State University campus.

From healthcare and energy grids to transportation networks, nearly every system we rely on is interconnected, which means a single vulnerability can ripple into widespread disruption. As ransomware attacks, data breaches and AI-driven threats continue to make national headlines, the demand for professionals who can build resilience, not just prevention, is more urgent than ever.

At Boise State, our School of Computing offers in-person and online programs designed to take a systems-thinking approach that trains professionals to protect people, processes and technology, not just code.

Most people will never help figure out how to build on another planet. Tyler Klinchuch is doing it twice.

The Boise State Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering senior wrapped up his second consecutive summer internship at NASA's Glenn Research Center, this time working to use already present materials on the Moon and Mars instead of launching everything from Earth.

He credits Boise State University's coursework and the Micro-G NeXT student team, which designs NASA-sponsored hardware tested at Johnson Space Center's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, with preparing him to tackle open-ended challenges. He also credits his mentor, Allison Christy ('20), a Boise State Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering alumna now at NASA, for inviting him back.

This is the kind of applied, high-stakes research experience the College of Engineering prepares students for.

Since its creation in 2001, Boise State University's Department of Computer Science has grown alongside the region's technology industry. In 2016, the College of Engineering moved the program downtown, placing students and faculty in the heart of Boise's growing tech ecosystem.

Nearly a decade ago, CJ Vargas ('18) was a mechanical engineering student struggling with his coursework and rethinking his future. A single conversation with an advisor redirected him into Boise State Construction Management and set the stage for one of the most full-circle stories.

Fast forward almost a decade, and CJ is the project manager who helped build the brand-new ESI Construction Management Building — a home for the very program that gave him his career. Vargas worked closely alongside Dr. Anthony Perrenoud, the William H. McMurren Endowed Chair of Construction Management, to coordinate between funders, contractors, and the university throughout the build.

This week, CJ will get to see the fulfillment of this career-defining project as Boise State University hosts the ribbon cutting of the program's new facility. In the College of Engineering, you don't just learn the industry, you help build it.
