I'm not saying you won't love hearing Grażyna Bacewicz’s Third String Quartet on Sept. 25's concert by the Aeolus Quartet without special preparation, but I am saying that there are various depths to love, and if you will give this a listen a time or two, the depth of your affection (and recognition) will be beautifully enhanced:

APRIL 30, 2027 TELEGRAPH QUARTET
We finish our season with soon-to-be new friends, the Telegraph Quartet (Eric Chin and Joseph Maile, violins; Pei-Ling Lin, viola; Jeremiah Shaw, cello) who formed in 2013 with an equal passion for the standard chamber music repertoire and contemporary, non-standard works alike. Described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “…an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape” and “powerfully adept… with a combination of brilliance and subtlety,” the Telegraph Quartet is a previous recipient of the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
The Telegraph Quartet is currently the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Michigan.

MARCH 12, 2027 POLONSKY-SHIFRIN-WILEY TRIO
The Polonsky-Shifrin-Wiley Trio made its debut at Dumbarton Oaks in February 2019. We are honored to join the list of prestigious chamber music presenters who have featured their performances. We look forward to a stunning concert of trios by Alexander Zemlinsky, Francis Poulenc, and Johannes Brahms (Op. 114).
Pianist Anna Polonsky is widely in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Ms. Polonsky has collaborated with the Guarneri, Orion, Juilliard, and Shanghai Quartets, and with such musicians as Mitsuko Uchida, Yo-Yo Ma, Richard Goode, and Emanuel Ax. A frequent guest at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, she was a member of its Chamber Music Society Two during 2002-2004. A Yale University faculty member since 1987, clarinetist David Shifrin has performed with the Chamber Music Society since 1982. He has collaborated with the Guarneri, Tokyo, and Emerson quartets, and frequently performs with pianist André Watts. A top prize winner in competitions throughout the world, including Munich, Geneva, and San Francisco, he has held principal clarinet positions in The Cleveland Orchestra and the American Symphony under Leopold Stokowski. His recordings have received three Grammy nominations and his performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra was named Record of the Year by Stereo Review. Peter Wiley was cellist of the Beaux Arts Trio from 1987 through 1998, with which he performed over a thousand concerts, including appearances with many of the world’s greatest orchestras. He succeeded his mentor, David Soyer, as cellist of the Guarneri Quartet from 2001 until the quartet retired from the concert stage in 2009.

November 6, 2026 HORSZOWSKI TRIO
Back (again and again) by popular demand, The Horszowski Trio are proven winners with the BCMS audience. Giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker), the Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world. Since their debut performance in New York City in 2011, they have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East, and India, traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered. For this Boise concert, we look forward to a terrific program, including Ravel’s only Piano Trio (1914) and Schubert’s magnum second Piano Trio No.2 in E-flat major D.929, op.100.

SEPT. 25 AEOLUS STRING QUARTET
In September of 2024 the Aeolus String Quartet’s combined grace “LIFT-ed” us up with a joyous performance of Paul Wiancko’s 2016 work. Audience comments included “The Aeolus quartet was beyond excellent. They exuded musicality, originality and enthusiasm” and “Thanks SO much for bringing Aeolus to Boise! Their joy in playing and . . . the Chamber Music Society make me very happy! This season’s concert promises joy and excitement including Smetana’s deeply personal and romantic Quartet in E Minor, “From My Life
Formed in 2008, the Quartet comprises violinists Isabelle Durrenberger and Rachel Shapiro, violist Caitlin Lynch, and cellist Jia Kim. The Aeolus Quartet has performed in venues ranging from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, to Dupont Underground, a subterranean streetcar station in DC's Dupont Circle. They were the 2013-2015 Graduate Resident String Quartet at the Juilliard School and are currently Quartet-in-Residence at Musica Viva NY.

It was an all-saxophones--all-the-time finish to the Boise Chamber Music Series last night. An extraordinary concert of contemporary saxophone quartet music, delivered by the hard-driving Kenari Quartet, was capped by a heart-rending performance of David Maslanka's "The Soul is Here for Its Own Joy." Seen here, just some of the 16 Boise State Dept. of Music saxophone students who participated in the quartet master class on Thursday, with their BSU sax professor Dr. Matthew Castner.
