Practical Nursing students marked an important milestone this semester as they officially “stepped up” into Medical-Surgical Nursing.
Med-Surg instructors Johnna Mortensen, MSN, RN, and Lindy Stubbs, BSN, RN, welcomed students with a special ceremony recognizing the transition from Fundamentals to Med-Surg. In Med-Surg, students begin making the important transition from learning nursing concepts to connecting what is happening inside the body to what they see at the bedside. They learn how disease processes change normal physiology, how those changes appear in assessment findings, and how to translate that information into safe, purposeful nursing care.
During the ceremony, students were reminded that they would not make this transition alone… their instructors would be there to help them step up throughout the semester! With “Hall of Fame” playing in the background, students symbolically crossed the classroom threshold and stepped into Med-Surg—taking another big step toward becoming nurses.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our colleague and friend, Avril Pebworth.

Avril spent nearly two decades as part of the BTC family, first as a student and later as a valued member of our staff. During that time, she touched more lives than we could ever count. Avril had a remarkable way of making people feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving their goals, whether she had just met you or she'd worked alongside you for years.

She had a true servant's heart, always willing to go above and beyond to help others. Even throughout her courageous battle with cancer, Avril continued to inspire us with her unwavering faith, strength, determination, and positivity. Her kindness, compassion, and joyful spirit left a lasting impact on our college community and on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Avril will be deeply missed, and her legacy of encouragement, service, and love for others will live on in the heart of BTC.
