Earlier this summer, professors Morgan Baker, Dr. Brandon Lutz and Dr. Jamie Levine led the Italy Summer Field Geology Program. Over the ~5-week course, GES students explored the geology of the Apennine Mountains through three major projects involving geologic mapping and interpretation of the paleoenvironmental and tectonic history. Some highlights of the trip include: the Coldigioco Geological Observatory, a day at Portonovo beach in Ancona, Mt. Frasassi and its underground caves, Costacciaro and the beauty of the Umbria region, conducting a 7-day geologic mapping project with Italian students, aperitivos on the Piazza in Perugia, movies in the bunkroom (Mama Mia!), climbing Monte Pisanino - one of the tallest peaks in the Alpi Apuane, the volcanic rocks in Orvieto, and the excitement of Rome at night.
At the trip's end, some students returned to Boone, some began new jobs or graduate school in other cities, some returned home before Fall semester, and some decided to continue traveling in Europe! All in all, the group had an amazing experience with plenty of everlasting memories.
