A new NSF MRI award will upgrade the Transmission Electron Microscope in Appalachian State University’s William C. and Ruth Ann Dewel Microscopy Facility — a collaborative effort between the departments of Biology and Geological and Environmental Sciences that expands high‑resolution imaging access for undergraduate and graduate researchers.

App State’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies and the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust invite current and pre‑service K–12 teachers to a free professional development workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Reich College of Education.

🕣 8:30 AM–3 PM: Educator Workshop (pre‑registration required)
🕒 3–4 PM: Survivor Testimony with Renee Fink (open to the public)

The workshop will introduce educators to curriculum resources developed for the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act and provide training on how to teach foundational lessons about the Holocaust.

In the concluding session, Holocaust survivor Renee Fink will share her story — from her childhood in hiding with a Dutch resistance family to rebuilding her life after the war. Today, Fink shares her journey to illuminate the enduring relevance of the Holocaust and to inspire others to stand up, speak out, and choose moral courage in the face of injustice.

This semester's Veterinary Technology Speaker Series kicks off tomorrow with "Rescue Animals 101: Adoption, Strays, & Community Partnerships" at 10 a.m. via Zoom!

This session — free and open to all — covers top tips for acclimating newly adopted pets, including the 3‑3‑3 rule; Good Samaritan guidance for community members who find stray animals; and how humane societies collaborate with agencies and organizations to support animal welfare. Hansen Dendinger, a graduate of the Veterinary Technology program, will share her experiences working at the Watauga Humane Society. She will also discuss how her skills have grown as she became a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).

We're pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kristen Baldwin Deathridge as director of High Country Humanities.

High Country Humanities, a CAS initiative that supports public‑facing humanities events and regional partnerships across the High Country, works to make humanities scholarship accessible and engaging for local audiences.

Deathridge, an associate professor in the Department of History, brings more than a decade of experience to the role. Her work in public history, historic preservation, and place‑based scholarship reflects her commitment to partnerships that serve the High Country.

Tomorrow: Appalachian State University's Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series kicks off with a visit by author Laure Gouraige!

Gouraige will deliver a craft talk from 3:30–4:45 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union 417 (Beacon Heights) and a reading from 6–7:15 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union 169 (Three Top Mountain). Sponsored by the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts and Appalachian Journal, both events are free and open to the public.
