While room numbers, furniture, and light fixtures might be different, some things remain the same. As we have done for many years, we welcomed students today to our first Departmental Tea in our new home in Edwin Duncan Hall. Today's goodies were provided by none other than our own emeritus faculty members, Drs. Holly and Jeff Hirst!

It's great to see new and returning Mountaineers enjoying old traditions in our new space!

The sun was shining for our first day in our new home!

Our welcome table stayed busy all day in the lobby, pointing students toward classrooms, answering questions, and handing out a few smiles along the way. Special shout out to math major Bright Uwakwe, who brought the energy right through the front door. 🖤💛

Same faculty, same programs, same commitment to our students.

Welcome to EDH, Mountaineers!

More interesting items were found as we were packing up the building. Does anyone remember the story behind these creatures that joined us today?

Packing up Walker Hall turned up something we did not know we still owned: an original LED TI-30 wired to an EduCALC classroom display, and both of them still work.

The TI-30 came out in June 1976 at $24.95, less than a good slide rule cost at the time. That price is why it showed up in classrooms so quickly. About 15 million were sold before the model was retired in 1983, which makes it one of the best selling calculators ever built.

The box it is plugged into solved a different problem. If you wanted thirty students to follow a keystroke sequence in 1978, you needed a display large enough to read from the back row. No projector, no software emulator, no screenshots. Just a nine digit LED panel sitting on the front desk, repeating whatever the instructor pressed.

Here it is doing 36 x 15. Forty-some years later it still lands on 540.

It's moving with us to Edwin Duncan Hall. If you took a math course at App State in the late 70s or 80s, we would like to know whether you remember seeing this thing in use, and who was teaching with it.

🚚 Moving day for the Department of Mathematical Sciences 🚚

The movers are working their way through Walker Hall, and our boxes are landing in the newly renovated Edwin Duncan Hall. Offices, classrooms, and all the other familiar features of Walker Hall are making the trip.

Walker Hall has been our home for over 30 years. A lot of students found their way through it, and we will miss it. But we're also very excited for our new space, new furniture, and the many exciting new memories Edwin Duncan will hold.

Starting this fall, you can find us in Edwin Duncan Hall. Stop by when the semester starts!

The Department of Mathematical Sciences mourns the loss of Professor Emeritus Dr. Harvey Durham. He served in many roles during his long tenure at the university, but above all he was a great friend and colleague to many in our department. Our thoughts go out to his family.

Dr. Harvey R. Durham, a former acting chancellor, provost and faculty member at App State, died on Friday, May 15, at the age of 88. Durham spent nearly 40 years at the university, including as chief academic officer for 24 years, before retiring in 2004.
