Advancement at Appalachian State University

When B.B. and D.D. Dougherty founded Watauga Academy in 1899, which would later become Appalachian State University, they were building on the belief that an education means empowerment. It means opportunity. It means changed lives, and ultimately, a changed world. Now over 120 years later, that belief is still at the core of everything we do.

Above all, Appalachian is a community that enables students to rise to the challenges and demands of an ever-changing world. And as a community, we are devoted to making such an education possible for all of our Mountaineers.

This is what we call the Appalachian Experience—our steadfast dedication to providing each and every student with the resources, opportunities, education and community they need to succeed.
