Dr. Laura Jiménez, one of our KHC HC 451 faculty members, has authored a forthcoming book, "Judging a Book By More Than Its Cover: A Critical Guide to Choosing Children’s Literature".

In "Judging a Book By More Than Its Cover", Jiménez offers teachers a set of tools and skills for finding, evaluating, and selecting children’s literature for use in the classroom. From picture books to early readers to middle grades novels, Jiménez guides teachers in applying a critical lens to the books they select for the classroom and offers practical suggestions and strategies for choosing representative, diverse books.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting author Tessa Hulls as our Fall Person-in-Residence. Tessa joined us for an evening lecture with 2 student facilitators (open to the broader BU community) and a morning breakfast (for KHC students).

Miya Peterson (CAS/Pardee’28) had this to say, "I was inspired by Tessa Hulls' transparency. Transparency is a key theme in Feeding Ghosts—it takes a lot of courage to transparently share a story so personal, and it takes a lot of courage to transparently share uncertainties surrounding the history of that story. Between describing the truth of what authoring is like to walking the audience through her research process, transparency was also something Tessa Hulls repeatedly emphasized during the event."

For KHC Associate Director Sophie Godley, "This is the best of Kilachand — where an artist and activist who is not afraid to tell her truth comes to our community and shares her joy and her talents with curious and engaged students...It is indescribably gratifying for me as a teacher to see students get to interact with a primary source — with an actual live person whose work they studied."

Last Friday, five of our alumni came back to share their knowledge and experience with our current students. They all agreed that the interdisciplinary nature of our curriculum and the opportunity to make friends across disciplines in KHC were some of the most valuable aspects of the program, helping them both professionally and personally today.

Thank you, Cathy, Aiden, Elisabeth, Christina, and Noah, for joining us! It is always a treat to have our alumni back in Kilachand Hall!

Boston University biological anthropologist Cheryl Knott has spent decades studying the great apes’ habitat in Borneo, now being devastated by wildfires. Her daughter and KHC alum Jessica Laman (CAS/KHC'26) is currently spending a year at the Rangkong station as a research volunteer.

Last year we piloted a Choose Your Own Adventure program alongside our co-curricular series. Students were able to explore a collection of public offerings around Boston and BU, including museums, concerts, guest lectures, conferences, and more, at a time that best fit their schedules.

We are glad to be offering our CYOA options again this year, and encourage our students to get off campus and soak up all that Boston has to offer!

You never know what a Kilachand class will involve, whether it's creating a semester-long visual collage, participating in a human knot exercise, or taking a class field trip to meet with the owner of a romance bookstore.

First-year seminars are a student favorite and give students the chance to explore important contemporary themes and problems in various fields. We encourage our students to take seminars based on interests or curiosities outside of their major, to help expand their ability to participate in the convergent research we take pride in at Boston University.
