Paul Kirby (MBA 1978) spent nine years building Dulcinea, a robot that, through Kirby’s iterative encoding, creates original works of art. Then an encounter with Kirby, Dulcinea, and a group of at-risk students sparked an a-ha moment: “I realized I wanted to give back and share what I’d done to excite and inspire others to pursue their own dreams.” He started the Kirby Foundation and formalized his approach of crafting a unified path from multiple passions, resulting in the FUSE methodology (find, upgrade, start, evolve).

Alumni gifts to the HBS Fund fuel the School’s efforts to prepare students to make a difference in business and society.

In her work at Mercy Housing—one of the nation’s largest affordable housing nonprofits— Sue Jia (MBA 2025) tested whether partnerships with health insurers could help fund services like food access, health education, and transportation, making them more sustainable and improving outcomes for residents. She applied insights from the Social Entrepreneurship and Systems Change elective she took at HBS. The popularity of that course reflects rising student interest in purpose-driven business leadership, an approach that creates positive societal impact alongside financial results.

When Earthbond helped a medical diagnostic lab in Lagos install solar panels, the climate-fintech startup improved not only the lab’s financial health, which saw monthly energy costs fall as much as 40 percent, but also the well-being of its patients, who no longer had to wait for medical-test results delayed by the city’s frequent power outages.

The savings have also benefited the local economy, says Earthbond founder and CEO Chidalu Onyenso (MBA 2023). “Entrepreneurs help countries move up the income ladder,” she explains, but in Nigeria those business owners are often stymied by a power grid that can’t meet demand.

Earthbond connects small- and medium-sized enterprises with the financing and expertise necessary to invest in an affordable, reliable, and sustainable source of power. Since its founding in 2023, the company has worked with more than 400 Nigerian businesses, replacing 300,000 liters of fossil fuel. The next step is becoming “an ecosystem enabler,” says Onyenso. “We’re asking: How do we bolster everyone's efforts?”
