Thank you to the community members who joined our students for our annual Obon celebration! The evening featured a Soran Bushi performance by our Summer Session students, followed by a traditional Obon dance that brought students and guests together.

Showa Boston’s Summer Session program kicked off this week with an opening ceremony to welcome students to campus. Speeches were delivered by Dr. Shinju Fujihira, Showa Boston’s President, Sharry Andrews, the Program Coordinator of Summer Session, and Dr. Alan Broomhead, the Director of Academic Programs on campus. Showa Boston’s Summer Session is an annual short-term program that hosts students from Showa Women’s University, Ritsumeikan University, and Kobe College. Students spend time in Boston taking ESL classes alongside special interest classes that focus on topics such as business, psychology, hospitality and more.

The Showa Boston Institute for Language and Culture is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shinju Fujihira as the Institution’s fifth president. Dr. Fujihira, originally from Takaoka, Toyama prefecture in Japan, brings nearly three decades of experience in academic programming, strategic planning, fundraising, communications strategy, and student-centered learning to Showa Boston’s campus. At Harvard University, Dr. Fujihira served as the Executive Director of the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, along with teaching experience at Tufts University, Harvard University and more. Students in our Global Business program recently visited the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation. This museum features an in-depth look at the history of mills and factories in the United States, which is topic that students study in their classes at Showa Boston. Students were able to see artifacts such as early fire engines, cash registers, bells and more.

Showa Boston was thrilled to partner with the Japan Society of Greater Hartford and the Consulate General of Japan in Boston to attend and support West Hartford’s Japan Summer Festival. Students performed soran bushi, helped with origami, and entertained guests throughout the day.

Showa Boston hosted our second annual 5K over the weekend! Students, staff, teachers and community members joined us on campus for a 5 kilometer or 3 mile road race. Congratulations to all of our runners, including our first place student and community finishers! 🏃🏻‍♀️

Showa Boston students volunteered at the Carroll Center for the Blind’s Walk for Independence. During the event, students helped with event logistics and runner support, including cheering on participants as they completed the course. Students even got to pose for photos with Tessie the Green Monster, one of the mascots of the Boston Red Sox.

Students spent the weekend volunteering with the Museum of Science for their AAPI heritage event! Activities included a soran bushi performance and trying out kendama at our table with guests.

Showa Boston had a busy April as we returned to the Japan Festival on the Boston Common. Students supported the Festival as volunteers, assisting with tasks ranging from line management to selling raffle tickets and working with children. Our soran bushi team also performed, and we also showcased the campus’s first-ever rock band, who performed on both the main stage and at the Downtown Crossing Sake Rock Festival.
