The College offers professional and accredited graduate and undergraduate degrees in architecture, interior architecture, l

andscape architecture, and design studies. The core of the BAC experience is a unique learning model where design education happens in the classroom and in the professional workplace simultaneously. Students acquire vital professional skills and expertise through hands-on projects and real-world employment while attending their classes and studios onsite or online, earning credit and gaining experience in both settings. Founded in 1889 as a club for practicing architects, the BAC has remained closely tied to Boston's professional design community throughout its history. Students are taught, mentored, and advised by over 400 practicing professionals, strengthening the connection between workplace experience and classroom learning. BAC graduates are accomplished designers with impressive resumes, portfolios, and professional networks. The BAC is located in the heart of Boston's historic Back Bay, surrounded by inspiring architecture, museums, performance venues, and colleges and universities, making it a strategic place to study design. Alongside its traditional onsite programs, the BAC offers innovative distance graduate degrees in architecture, interior architecture, and design studies, including pioneering programs in sustainable design, historic preservation, and design for human health. The BAC strives to make the design professions accessible to diverse communities. Its policy of open admission makes a design education possible for many talented students who would not otherwise be afforded such an opportunity. Its student body includes a large population of first-generation college students as well as members of under-represented groups, fostering a rich and inclusive learning environment.

Tanuja Naryal (she/her) pursued a Master of Architecture at the BAC through the Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure (IPAL) program, graduating as one of only 8 students to complete the NCARB IPAL track at Commencement 2026. 🎓

Balancing full-time work and graduate study, she learned to question design decisions and read drawings as a language. Her thesis—an education center for underprivileged children in India—uses clay sun-dried brick screens and natural ventilation to create dignified, cooling learning spaces rooted in vernacular architecture. 🏛️🌿

Scholarships from Professional Women in Construction and the Urban Land Institute led to internships and her current role at Bargmann Hendrie + Archetype, where she works across residential, life sciences, and historical preservation. She earned the BAC's Practice Distinction Award for excellence in concurrent professional practice.

Join us Oct 5 as we light up 320 Newbury and celebrate a major milestone in decarbonizing our Back Bay home. 🌟💡

A special illumination will highlight the geothermal wells beneath 320—and the progress toward activating them. We’ll also launch our “Name a Well” campaign to complete the final phase of this project.

This event kicks off a month-long celebration of the rededication of 320 Newbury and 60 years of the BAC in Back Bay. The light installation will shine all October as a symbol of where we’ve been—and where we’re going.

Join Mahesh Daas on the GBH Culture Show at the Boston Public Library for a timely conversation about heat-resilient urban design, public space, shade, trees, cooling infrastructure, and the future of the city.

Drawing on his experiences growing up in India, his work as an architect, and ideas from Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future, Mahesh will ask: Should access to shade become something citizens can reasonably expect from a city?
