MassArt Professional and Continuing Education

MassArt Professional and Continuing Education Taught on MassArt's campus. Built for adult lives. We believe that great art requires both. Our faculty, facilities, and curriculum reflect this belief.

MassArt's Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) offers over 100 courses and workshops in fine art and design, professional design certificates, summer immersive programming and more. MassArt's professional and continuing education program is about two things: creative vision and technical skills. Our faculty is comprised of practicing artists who set high standards for themselves and encoura

ge their students to do the same. Our facilities are built for working artists. Our curriculum is designed to nurture individual expression and creativity while helping students master the appropriate tools. Our students are diverse, yet have one common characteristic: they appreciate the effort and dedication that successful art-making requires.

MassArt designers are bringing sustainable fashion to the runway! ♻️✨

MassArt Fashion Design Certificate students and alumni Asia Kepka, Sabra George, Sylvie Djian, and Prachi Mahurkar are bringing their designs to the runway for The Open Door’s Third Annual Thrift the Runway event this September, in conjunction with Hunger Action Month.

Featuring entirely upcycled, ready-to-wear designs, the show celebrates creative approaches to sustainable style while raising funds for local food-assistance programs through The Open Door.

Rethinking the resources and materials we use - and finding new possibilities in what might otherwise be discarded - is a shared thread between The Open Door’s work and MassArt’s Fashion Design Certificate, where sustainability is a cornerstone of the program.

Come see what Asia, Sabra, Sylvie, and Prachi are bringing to the runway! 👀

💥 Hacienda Issue #4 Comic and Cover Illustration by Dave Ortega

Laura Meilman is a Cambridge based cartoonist, painter, and teacher. She holds a B.A. in Painting from Earlham College and an MFA from the Center for Cartoon Studies.

She brings humor and heart to her memoir comics which often focus on relationships and nonmonogamy, mental health, finding oneself, and puns (can’t forget the puns!).

Her work has appeared in The Boston Globe and The Atlantic, including her acclaimed series of drawings of Boston’s subway system, “Project T-scapes”.

“I think of my classes as a space for people to come together and experiment with different techniques. The world of comics is a community and I approach my classes the same way.  I also genuinely think that having fun is an important part of cartooning, and I love when I am able to bring in humor and lightheartedness to the class”

💥 Laura’s “Tyger 1” is an experiment with watercolor comics, which started as a demo for her Color and Form class (spring semester). In Color and Form we borrow aspects of other art forms for ouTygerics, like poetry and music. This painted comic illustrates William Blake’s poem ‘The Tyger’

Heide Solbrig is a cartoonist and media scholar, a herding dog enthusiast and generally tries to be a good egg, support immigrant rights, and write and draw good stories. She teaches, design, social history, comics storytellin

In a world that constantly competes for our attention, MassArt New England offers the rare gift of uninterrupted time to create. Week Two was a celebration of what becomes possible when artists are given the space to follow their curiosity.

Elizabeth O’Reilly’s Plein Air students spent the most perfect of summer days outdoors studying light, color, and place, while the studios were absolutely buzzing with infectious energy in Elizabeth Donsky’s 100 Drawings Challenge.

One student’s reflection truly captured the spirit of the week: “The pressure to make something wonderful, something that’s worth our time, can be paralyzing. This class gave me the privilege to simply focus on making.”
A poetic reminder that artistic growth isn’t just about mastering new techniques. It’s about finding space to experiment, to play, and to reconnect with the joy of creating, alongside a community of artists who encourage you to keep going.

By week’s end, students left with more than finished work. They left with renewed creative momentum, fresh perspectives, and the confidence that comes from dedicating time to what matters most: making.

Week One at MassArt New England brought together a community of artists united by curiosity and a desire to grow. They shared the stories that shaped their work, learned from one another’s perspectives, and discovered the creative energy that comes from working alongside others.

For seven days, artists stepped away from their everyday routines and immersed themselves in the practice of making. From painting alla prima to exploring abstraction and mixed media, to stitching stories through embroidery, each studio challenged students to push their practice in new directions.

By week’s end, the studios became galleries as classmates gathered to celebrate each other’s work. It’s a reminder that some of the most meaningful growth happens not only in the studio, but in a community of artists learning from, inspiring, and celebrating one another.

There’s something so special about the art of printing photographs. It’s beautifully meticulous and unexpectedly addictive.
We loved watching students line the walls with their prints, engage in thoughtful critique, and share skills. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of studying digital photography at PCE. Some of the best learning happens not just in the making, but in the conversations that follow.
