Congratulations to Christos Cassandras (SE, ECE) on receiving this year’s IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Outstanding Research Award! His work focuses on autonomous vehicles and the systems that help them drive—work that could one day get rid of traffic lights altogether.

Cassandras spent more than 40 years studying how computers and machines make decisions. Lately, his work has focused on a problem nearly every driver knows well: sitting at a red light with no cross traffic in sight, wondering why it takes so long for the light to turn green.

That idea—proving with mathematical models and intelligent algorithms using cars’ relative speeds, mass, and distance as inputs that self-driving cars will behave safely before they are ever let loose on the streets—has become the foundation of Cassandras’s career and the reason his name keeps coming up in conversations about transportation.

This past summer, our students took to the lab and put in the work.

Follow along as Musarat Khan walks us through her research as a Summer Term Alumni Research Scholar in our STARS program.

Summer Term Alumni Research Scholars (STARS) and Distinguished Summer Research Fellowships (DSRF) are just two of the opportunities we offer for undergraduate students to further their research and education.

The STARS program provides a housing allowance of $4,500 to work in Boston alongside College of Engineering faculty over the summer, performing research to create solutions to some of society’s most challenging problems.

Distinguished Summer Research Fellows work full-time in the lab of an engineering faculty member for at least 10 weeks during the summer. The fellowship provides students with $11,000 over the summer to support housing, living, and other related expenses.

Interested? Stay tuned to find out when applications will open for Summer 2027!

🏆 Two faculty-led BU Engineering projects each earned a $75,000 Ignition Award, and three more received early-stage awards from BU Technology Development.

The awards provide funding and expert guidance to help researchers move promising ideas from the lab toward real-world impact.

$75,000 Awards:
🔬 Optical technology to address drone threats
Thomas Bifano (ME, MSE, BME, ECE) and David Bishop (ECE, Physics, MSE, ME, BME) are developing technology to improve the performance and reduce the cost of deformable mirror systems. Their work could make directed-energy defenses against low-cost drones more affordable and scalable, with potential benefits for civilian and military safety.

🌊 Quieter underwater propulsion
Tommaso Ranzani (ME, MSE, BME) is developing bioinspired jet propulsion technology to power underwater robots and vehicles. The technology could support quieter operations and longer missions, with less need for maintenance—all particularly valuable advantages in settings where sound matters, from defense to aquaculture. It could also have applications in fluid pumps.

Early-Stage Awards:
🧬 Tissue evaluation
Michael Albro (ME, MSE, BME) is advancing research on technology for evaluating tissue.

🤖 Autonomous science instruments
Keith Brown (ME, MSE, Physics) is working on autonomous scientific instruments to support research and discovery.

🌱 In-soil sensors
Miguel Jimenez (BME, MSE) is investigating new approaches to sensing within soil.

Congratulations to the faculty members and their teams as they take the next steps toward turning research into practical applications!
