National Stroke Awareness Month is a reminder that stroke doesn’t just affect older adults—it’s increasingly impacting younger people, too.

At Tufts University School of Medicine, vascular neurologist Lester Y. Leung is working to make young stroke patients more visible—and better supported.

“Stroke in young people is actually not that rare,” Leung notes, pointing to a growing trend in cases among adults under 55. But recovery can look different: while physical symptoms may be less obvious, many young survivors face long-term challenges like fatigue, anxiety, and seizures—all while balancing careers, school, or family life.

The future may feel uncertain, but the Class of 2026 is ready for it.

At the 2026 Graduate Student Commencement Ceremony at Tufts University School of Medicine, student speaker Eliot Konzal (), MBS26, reflected on the resilience that carried this class through long nights, difficult exams, setbacks, and moments of doubt and the strength they found in one another along the way.

“When I look around this space, I do not see uncertainty. I see hope, compassion, and resilience.”

To every graduate stepping into medicine, research, public health, and beyond: this is only the beginning. The future of health care and public health is stronger because of you.

Congratulations, Class of 2026. We can’t wait to see what you do next.

National Stroke Awareness Month is a reminder that recognizing the signs of a stroke can save a life—and a brain.

If someone suddenly has trouble speaking, a drooping face, or weakness on one side, remember FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911.

Even if you’re unsure, act quickly. “Time is brain”—every second matters when it comes to restoring blood flow and preventing long-term damage.
