When Nadhira Afifa, MPH ’20 first arrived at Harvard Chan School, she hid in a bathroom stall because she was nervous and experiencing imposter syndrome. By graduation, the supportive environment she found at the School gave her to the courage to be the School's Convocation speaker. Learning that "what [she] had to say actually mattered,” Afifa has taken her clinical and policy expertise and the connections she made at Harvard to tackle malnutrition in her home country of Indonesia, founding a nutrition and wellness clinic alongside alumni from Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School.

During Fall Orientation, 460 new Harvard Chan School students—from 35 countries and territories—had the opportunity to connect with faculty, meet fellow students in their cohorts, and learn about various resources offered at the School.

One session new students attended was a workshop reflecting on what drew them to careers in public health, led by Fawn Phelps, director of leadership development in the Office of Educational Programs, and Ra’Shaun Nalls, director of community engagement. “By taking a moment to return to the values that brought them to Harvard Chan and listening to the values that brought their classmates to the School, the students begin to build a community that lasts through their time on campus and long after graduation day,” explained Phelps.

New students at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health were welcomed to the School at Fall Orientation, which began on Aug. 25.
