When JetBlue’s newest BlueHouse Lounge opened to the public at Boston Logan Airport on August 27, Shammai Winitzer (CAS’27) could proudly say that he had helped build it. Winitzer, a senior majoring in Architectural Studies, spent this past summer as a field intern at Turner Construction, a general contracting firm working for JetBlue at Logan. There, he gained a deeper understanding of day-to-day construction operations while working with designers and consultants to bring designs to life.
“I got to take a break from designing models and plans in the classroom and learn how those drawings can transform into physical spaces—from gutting existing structures to installing light fixtures, painting, and coordinating equipment. Even though I am still studying architecture and hope to one day practice in the field, this experience was just as valuable as any design-focused experience. Experiencing the physical side of architecture forced me to ask: Can this actually be built? And how? Thinking about these questions, I gained a better understanding of the relationship between architecture and construction, how drawings can transform into a physical space, and why architects need to understand how their designs are actually built.”
