We are so excited to welcome Dr. Trevor Sherwood to campus today! We can't wait to hear about his research concerning IBD and his experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

Biography: Trevor is a Scientific Associate Director in the Bristol Myers Squibb Discovery Chemistry group in Princeton, NJ. He earned his B.S. in chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2008 and then earned his Ph.D. in 2013 with Prof. Scott Snyder at Columbia University where he completed multiple total syntheses of alkaloid and polyphenolic natural products. In 2013, Trevor joined BMS where he has performed research in immunology, oncology, and neuroscience and has led multiple drug discovery programs. He is passionate about LGBTQ representation in chemistry and co-organized a session at the 2024 Spring ACS National Meeting featuring presentations from LGBTQ medicinal chemists.

New year, new seminar speaker! We are so excited to kick off this semester's seminar series by welcoming Professor Emmanuel (Manolis) Tzanakakis to campus! Professor Tzanakakis teaches Chemical & Biological Engineering at Tufts University.

Biography: Manolis Tzanakakis is Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Tufts University, with appointments in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology program at Tufts Medicine, and the Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Drug Development. He earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (UMN) and trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the UMN Stem Cell Institute and the Diabetes Center at the University of California–San Francisco. His group focuses on stem cell engineering and bioprocessing, developing cellular therapies for diabetes, optogenetic engineering of cells and tissues, especially the endocrine pancreas, and producing recombinant biologics. Professor Tzanakakis has received the James D. Watson Investigator Award and fellowships from the NIH and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. His research has been funded by the NSF, NIH, New York State, and the Department of Defense. He is an AIMBE Fellow.

It’s been a little while since our last seminar, and we’re excited to welcome our next speaker today! Andrew D. Jones, Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at Duke University, will be presenting TODAY at 12 PM in 108 Snell Engineering Center.

Biography: Akhenaton-Andrew (Andrew) D. Jones, III is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering and affiliate faculty in the Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science Department, Duke Materials Initiative, and Integrated Toxicology & Environmental Health Program at Duke University. His research uses engineering and policy analysis to help solve global challenges related to water and health. He is a 2021 recipient of the NIH R35 Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award to develop new models and tools for studying biofilms and a 2019 Sloan SEED fund award to develop new tools for point of use water quality monitoring systems. He was recognized as Young Investigator by the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State, the premier center for biofilm research in the US. He received a BS in Mathematics and BS, MS, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT where he was a Lemelson Presidential Fellow and Alfred P. Sloan UCEM Scholar. He completed post-doctoral training as a Future Faculty Fellow at Northeastern University. He has directly supervised 2 high school students, over 20 undergraduates, 5 MS, 6 PhD, and 2 post-doctoral trainees including 12 from underrepresented backgrounds and 24 women. He and his team have presented at over 50 conferences and seminars. He is the 2023 Recipient of the Duke Outstanding Postdoctoral Mentor Award.
