Statement from Simmons University President Lynn Perry Wooten on Gloria Steinem ‘73HD:

“Gloria Steinem was a trailblazer whose courage, conviction, and tireless advocacy transformed the movement for women’s equality and changed our society in profound and lasting ways. She challenged deeply entrenched barriers, elevated women’s voices, and inspired generations to demand – and create – a more equitable world.

We are grateful for the deep and enduring connection she shared with Simmons that spanned more than half a century. In 1973, she delivered our Commencement address and received an honorary Doctorate of Human Justice degree from Simmons. Speaking to our graduates at a pivotal moment, she celebrated the ‘enormous courage’ of women daring to break glass ceilings, ‘to be the first in their field; to explore the outer edge.’ Forty years later, she returned to Simmons to engage a new generation of students, and most recently joined us as a keynote speaker at the Simmons Leadership Conference – reminding us of how far we have come, the work that remains, and the importance of holding onto hope.

We are profoundly grateful for Gloria’s friendship with Simmons, for the countless women she inspired, and for the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. Honoring that legacy means continuing the work she spent her life advancing: breaking barriers, amplifying women’s voices, and expanding possibilities for generations to come.”

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, a landmark in the long fight for women’s right to vote. While a powerful step forward, it was not the end of the journey; securing equal rights and full participation for all women continues today.

At Simmons, that pursuit is deeply tied to who we are. For generations, Simmons alumnae/i have broken barriers, expanded opportunities, and used their leadership to drive meaningful change in their communities and professions.

Today, we honor the trailblazers who paved the way—and the leaders continuing the work.

How are you advancing equality in your community? Share your story below.

Congratulations to Regina Marshall '98, who recently became CEO of Advocates, Inc., one of Massachusetts' largest providers of behavioral health and human services.

Regina's leadership journey has deep roots at Simmons. As class president and later president of the Student Government Association, she gained early experience navigating leadership spaces, making difficult decisions, and finding her voice.

“I could be the leader I wanted to be, and it launched me into the rest of my career,” she says of her Simmons experience.

Today, Regina draws on those lessons as she leads an organization serving thousands of individuals and families across Massachusetts—and she hopes to give back by connecting with current Simmons students as a mentor and speaker.
